Summary
The first time Mick calls after Juno leaves Mars, Juno is alone in the Carte Blanche’s kitchen, drinking coffee at 2210, ship time.
“Hey, you haven’t talked to Sasha lately or anything, have you?”
“No?” Juno snorts. “Just ‘cause I’m off Mars doesn’t mean I’m gonna run into Sasha next second, Mick.”
(Mick, Sasha, Juno, and a few lifetimes of friendship.)

Summary
Is it a breakout? Goodness, Buddy certainly hopes so. This is the most excitement she’s had in at least a month. Her blaster slips into her hand almost on instinct, and she swings around the corner just in time to see the blade sink into the lower warden’s neck.
The woman holding it has shocking green hair that stands out like a satellite, and eyes as sharp and deadly as the knife in her hand.
Buddy’s breath catches in her throat.
(Vespa, the first time I ever saw you was the most exciting day of my life.)

They met in the center. Buddy’s hand was warm and the look in her eye was quietly thrilled. “You’re here,” she said nonsensically, still smiling that giddy smile.
Vespa wondered sometimes if that wasn’t still half a question. If it was, that was fine; she would be there to give the answer for the rest of her life.
“I’m here,” she answered.

Summary
The woman’s fingers curl around the blaster in his hand. Perhaps it is an amount of trust he cannot explain, or a faith he did not know he was still capable of, or simply his body giving up on him—but Jet’s grip loosens.
The gun does not have a stun setting. She removes the laser cart instead, then holsters it. Her eyes stay on him, wary, but something in her face has softened. Into the sudden silence she speaks the words that he will remember for the rest of his life.
In the dim light of the first floor of the Lighthouse, Jet Sikuliaq reinvents himself.
(Jet, Buddy, and the trust that grows from endless time.)

Sometimes, Anna wakes up and still feels the gray licking at the corners of her vision.
Mabel clings close on those days, without her even having to say a word. She does not ask questions, only follows her like a shadow, hands hovering until Anna pulls her close.
Mabel does not ask questions, but Anna answers them all the same.

“What?” Vespa breathes. “But Buddy— she got out.”
Steel pauses. “What?”

(Spoilers for Season 3 Finale.)
Gradually, Peter Nureyev becomes aware of three things: A crick in his neck from sleeping uncomfortably, a warmth by his side, and the voice of Juno Steel, rough around a yawn.
“Ransom... you awake?” It’s half muffled into Nureyev’s collarbone. It makes him smile with his eyes still closed.
“Mm. Good morning,” Nureyev says. He frowns. “Why are you still calling me that?”

She’s close enough to touch. Her wedding gown pools out onto the floor, blood-stained and torn in three places, her hair unpinned. Even like this, here, in the darkest, most corrupt pit in the entire galaxy, Buddy Aurinko is the most beautiful vision she's ever seen.
In a den of pirates, Vespa Ilkay holds onto what she knows.

(Spoilers for Juno Steel and What Lies Beyond 2.)
It’s like clockwork, Sasha thinks.
Since she’s made a point to be as uncooperative as possible, Aurinko’s stopped the faux-friendly negotiations and simply locked her in the spare room. Aurinko, Ilkay, and Sikuliaq take turns guarding her; Rita keeps track of the video feed; and three times a day, on the dot, like clockwork, Juno’s let in with a tray of food.
“Hey,” Juno says.
During their escape from Dark Matters, Juno makes the choice to take Sasha with him.

(Spoilers up to Juno Steel and What Lies Beyond 2.)
14:13, ship time. Four hours since seizing the Carte Blanche. Sasha waits for Juno to wake.
His first words come in a derisive scoff. He rolls his shoulders and neck, tugs at the electronic handcuffs linking his wrists to Aurinko’s bolted-down desk and says, “C’mon. Really, Wire?”

Summary
Detective Steel’s an odd one, Rita thinks, kinda like her. He cuts off her rambling but he’s never proper mad about it, not really, and he complains about her snack-powdered fingers but he always buys her more when she asks, so what’s she supposed to do, let them expire?
She’s not not smart. She knows most people think she’s too hard to work with. But Detective Steel keeps up with her just fine.

“I hate you,” Laurent says, heart hammering in his chest. He regrets the words the moment they’re out of his mouth.
Auguste leans back as though Laurent has physically struck him, mouth open.
(Laurent sneaks out one morning. Auguste is, quite understandably if you asked him, very worried.)

His chest is still heaving, rising and falling as though he’s finished a footrace. The garden and the pet ring he’d weathered stoically, because both had looked so different in decor and atmosphere compared to the first time he’d been here, a court remade. He’d been given a throne instead of the floor at Laurent’s feet. Laurent had tucked a white flower behind his ear, playful and careless of propriety.
The whipping post had been the same.
Damen returns to Arles.

“Your Majesty,” Jord says, “there was… a man demanding to see you. At the palace gates.”
And then the doors open again, and both Damen and Laurent stand up in alarm as the figure of Auguste, long-dead, steps into the room, brandishing a sword. “Laurent,” the man says, dropping the sword guilelessly. “It’s you, brother—I feared you were lost to my memory—”
“No,” Laurent says hoarsely, face white, and his hand snakes around the dagger on their side table and levels it at the man’s neck. “You’re dead.”

“What’s your name?”
“Sapphire,” Nicaise lied.
A gloved finger dug into his pulse point, a low growl in his ear. “Try to pick my pockets again, Sapphire, and you’ll find a bullet in your throat.”
More than a year after the Regent is executed for treason, Nicaise is still paying off his indenture, shipped someplace where no one who knows him will ever find him, not that anyone would ever care to try. Desperate and careless, he stumbles into the path of the deadliest criminal in the Barrel.

Summary
Fifteen minutes into their impromptu meetup, Erasmus asks him, “Why did you pick me to help you?”
Laurent considers him. “You’re a good friend of Damen,” he says. It’s a surprisingly simple thing. “I think you’d know what he’d like. And you’re my friend, too.” After a hesitant moment, he continues: “And, Nicaise and Vannes would both just mess with me if I asked them. Auguste is at a conference today, and Nikandros couldn’t keep a secret like this from Damen if his life depended on it.”
Erasmus laughs softly at him. “Okay,” he says. “Come on, then.”
(Laurent is planning to propose. Damen is also planning to propose. Fortunately for both of them, it's not a race. Really.)

Summary
Only three weeks after Riko Moriyama’s death, Neil had finally renormalized a routine. He woke up; he went for a run; he even stopped at one of the park benches, a solitary spot of quiet that Neil liked. Stability for him was a weak, fledgling thing, but he liked it.
“Hey, that’s my fucking seat.”
Until some mouthy blue-eyed kid decided to disrupt it, at least.
