Summary
“You’re gonna have to come in eventually,” says Sam, then he takes a deep breath and steps away from Barnes, back towards the club. “But it doesn’t have to be now.” Barnes’ eyes widen, and he goes utterly still. “I’ve got some conditions though, if I’m gonna let you go.”
A year after the helicarriers go down, Sam finds not the Winter Soldier, but Bucky Barnes, who's trying his best to live and not just survive while on the run. Sam finds him and keeps finding him, and eventually, Sam finds himself too.
An alternate take on canon where Sam and Bucky have been secretly meeting up since after CATWS.

“Christ,” Steve says without thinking. Reaches out to touch the bruise on Bucky’s throat. “What’d she do, try and eat you alive?”
“Oh,” Bucky says, quiet, maybe a little embarrassed. “No, I mean—you know, it was just a little necking.”
“Right,” Steve agrees, “necking,” as if he’s ever done anything of the damn sort, and then notices another bruise, lower down, right on Bucky’s collarbone. If he squints he can make out the shape of her teeth, the way she’d set them into Bucky’s skin and bitten down, laid claim, and it makes Steve oddly furious, makes him want to hurt Bucky himself. He digs his thumb hard into the dark bruise on Bucky’s throat, scrapes his nail across Bucky’s skin, and it’s a step too far, he knows that, sorta expects Bucky to say hey, or maybe come on, Steve, what the hell.
He doesn’t expect the sound that comes out of Bucky’s mouth: a breathy little gasp that has Steve running hot in a second, and then it’s like the both of them are holding their breath, the air full of nothing but still dark heat and the summer storm still crackling outside.

There's no way a man with the kind of soft touch Sam Wilson has could ever do all the brutal things Bucky wants somebody to do, and this is what Bucky tells himself every time he stays over, every time he borrows a toothbrush and gets into Sam's shower, every time he jerks himself off under hot water, resenting every single stroke and the ridiculously-nice-smelling shower gel he uses to do it, too.

During the war, a group of American soldiers were sat around in their barracks, eating dinner and making small talk. One of them asked his friend, "Here's a question for you. Imagine you see a Luftwaffe bomber and a V-PVO bomber. Which do you attack first, the German plane or the Soviet plane?" His friend thought about it, then replied, "Well, the German one, of course! Duty before pleasure."
