Peter clutches the boy’s limp form to his chest, remembering belatedly that he shouldn’t move him due to the possibility of spinal injury. But all his medical training has been drowned out by the need to feel Carter’s heartbeat against his chest, and Carter’s breath against his cheek. Peter cradles the back of Carter’s head with his palm, but he pulls back when he feels something wet and sticky.
Blood. Peter’s hand is covered in Carter’s blood.

The blade glinted, the steely reflection pierced through the haze behind his eyes.
Just one small cut, he told himself. Just enough to make this stop.
He pressed the blade to his left forearm, below the elbow crease. The sting was bright and clean, so different from the dull ache in his chest. For one moment, the world was still, all the incoherent aches replaced by that sensation. Then—

“Speaking.”
“Hello, Doctor Benton. I’m calling from the Frederickson Rehabilitation Center in Atlanta. I have you listed as the emergency contact for John Carter?”
“What’s happened.”
“I’m afraid that a few hours ago, Doctor Carter was admitted to the hospital with some very serious injuries.”
“What kind of injuries, exactly?”
“Doctor Benton, he was bleeding significantly from his left arm and wrist. It appears… Well, it appears he made an attempt on his own life.”
