Summary
It’s the same Joel and it isn’t - still rough around the edges with strangers and slow drawl and she still manages to sneak up on him from his right side - but he’s changed since Colorado and Utah and everything that happened in between. Ellie would almost be tempted to joke that penicillin made him nicer, but she knows it has more to do with finding her monosyllabic and covered in blood and trying to fix it because that’s what Joel does, he fixes things.
Joel fixes the light in the dining room, the drain in the sink, and she tries not to think of what his version of fixing things would’ve been in the hospital, hates that she knows he was probably lying and hates that she knows she won’t call him out on it. Right now, he’s fixing an old window air conditioning unit because otherwise she’s taken to threatening to sleep in the river if she has to try to sleep in 90 degree heat because the ancient central air of the house can’t keep up.

“Watch where you’re fucking going,” he grumbles, but it’s with none of his usual bite.
Still, Ellie scowls and mutters, “dick,” under her breath and takes another careful step forward, testing the mushy ground with her sneaker before following behind him dutifully.
Then it’s her turn to pretend she can’t see Joel watching her out of the corner of his eye, hand flexing at his side like he’s fighting the urge to reach out and make sure she doesn’t trip again. Ellie catches his eye, and he immediately sets his jaw and faces forward, but it’s enough that she can’t help but think, got you, motherfucker.
Dude might have a fucking heart after all.
(Or Ellie is clumsy and Joel is not fucking endeared by it at all. He’s not.)

The ends of her sweatshirt are grasped in her fists, wrapped around her hands. He half expects her to pull the hood up, tie the strings over her face, and completely tuck herself away. It makes him think of the other night with that nasty motel bedspread pulled right up beneath her chin, asking about locks on the door. It makes him think of a scared kid.
“What difference does it make?” Ellie mumbles out while avoiding his gaze. “I’m out of there now.” She turns a steely gaze towards him. “And I’m not going back.”
“Wasn’t planning on makin’ ya,” Joel whispers in the late night air. The stars are coming out. If it’s a clear enough night, maybe he can point out Mars to her.
