There is a hint of something viscerally disturbing about all of those little sights. Something undismissably wrong, twisted, ruined, and broken about ‘Phainon’s current appearance. Anaxa would not mistake Phainon for another student, would never not recognize Phainon’s unmistakable presence up this close.
However ridiculous in theory, the answer is quite simple indeed.
This is not Phainon.
It takes but a look for Anaxa to know the person standing in front of him is not the Phainon he knows. Something is noticeably wrong.
