Summary
“I wish I could see into your head,” you murmur, freeing one hand from his grasp and tapping a finger against his forehead, right between his eyebrows.
“You don’t,” he says, because god, you don’t. He’s the exact kind of man that he wants to protect you from. But he’s also the only man that can protect you the right way.
(Once he came back, did what he had to do for Ever, everything would work out. His life, a list of wants: you and nothing else.)

Summary
A fever pitch. Its synonyms: excitement, agitation. Two opposites shoved into the same feeling. That’s the only way to describe the way things are around you and Caleb now. Breaths are counted, often hitched. Touches are limited before they get dangerous. Caleb has invited you to Skyhaven even with the fever pitch, the heat and the excitement and the agitation. Maybe he’s a glutton for punishment. Maybe he knows he deserves it. Maybe he’ll take you any way he can have you.
(You and he used to be synonyms. Two words with the same definition. The question you both try and fail to answer: what are you now?)

Summary
Then he gets up, and — yeah. His eyes are level with the tip of her nose. She’s smiling like the cat that got the cream and ate the canary, which, in Aventurine’s presence, feels like a violation of some untold universal law. Because if one of them has to be wearing that look, it should obviously always be him.
“How’s the weather down there?” Stelle asks, hitting him with a devastatingly self-satisfied tilt of the head.
(She’s wearing heels when she invites him to dance. It’s kind of a problem.)

Summary
“So,” Sunday starts, unsure. “Where will I room?"
And a stillness seems to ripple across the members of the Astral Express, their expressions morphing into sheepiness, exasperation, and something like pity.
Himeko steps forward first, clearing her throat. “Sunday,” she says. “I’m very sorry, but — ”
“The other passenger cabin is currently out of order!” Pom-Pom pipes up from the side.
(Sunday doesn't manage to get a room on the train, but he does get a roommate.)
