Summary
Shane never got over what happened in that last season in Montreal. The first year in Ottawa was never supposed to break them like this. Neither of them know it's the last time they will argue like this. After a brutal loss and a worse fight, Shane vanishes-taken by the one person Ilya has spent years trying to ignore and forget. When the case ends in Ottawa River, everyone else accepts the inevitable.
Every except Ilya. Because Shane has never been good at letting go. And Ilya has never been good at giving up on him.Shane disappears into the river-and Ilya is the only one who refuses to let him go.
Everyone else believes Shane is dead; Ilya believes he's still fighting his way home.

this is an example of the best version of this trope, one where it deals with the aftermath as well as the actual ordeal. i’m obsessed with the style and tone. it’s got a purposeful messiness and a vagueness that circles back around to specificity and i am so impressed by the authors ability to trust their reader to fill in all the gaps bc it’s so much more effective this way. also just really strong and consistent characterization and the use of repetition here is really elegant! no gimmicks just the continuous referral to a set of symbols and images that convey a feeling (the river, the ring, the cabin, the phone charger) i feel like writing essays about this. i have writer envy -

Summary
“Fuck it,” He mutters in Russian before just pressing his thumb down onto the phone next to Hollander’s contact.
Ilya puts it onto speaker, listening to just up to the first half of the second ring before pressing the big red button, not letting it go on any longer.
Fuck.
He drops his phone and presses the palms of both of his hands to his eyes, trying to stabilize himself.
Ring.
His heart practically jumps out of his chest when he hears the sound coming from his phone. He looks down at where it’s sitting on the bed, the screen reads “Jane."
Fuck.
Out of panic, Ilya declines the call but quickly makes his way to his messages app, finding Hollander’s contact and typing out a quick few messages back to back.
Ilya: did not mean to call.
Ilya: was accident
Ilya: no need for call backIlya takes a deep breath and sets his phone back down only to be met with an immediate response from Hollander.

OR, 5 times Ilya had a nightmare & called Shane + the 1 time Shane was there to comfort him in person

He makes it to an empty hallway. It’s quiet but he can hear the faraway buzz of usual nighttime hospital noises. He braces a hand against the wall, feeling his pulse thread faster and faster even at a stand still, he ducks his head and squeezes his eyes closed shut as curls fall over his sweating forehead.
He hated the thoughts that circled around in his mind like a vicious whirlpool: of David laying there so deathly still and unwell, of his mother in her own bed, slumped and pale, of his father on that cold, metal table in a quiet Russian morgue. He bit back the bile that rushed up the back of his throat.
He’d never had much luck with his own family back in Russia but he’d been welcomed so openly into Shane’s, embraced by their love, folding him in like he was one of their own — he’d just never really given any of it much thought of what it’d be like to have to lose one of them, too.
or: david hollander has a heart attack and ilya has a lot of feelings about it

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ gorgeously written, perfectly in character, but DEAD DOVE!!!! also the chapter names parallel the Odyssey and it’s not superfluous and it’s actually a really elegant touch and that one choice really elevates this for me
