Summary
Oscar’s going to throw up.
He’s heard stories about mermaids, how they lurk in the dark blue water, calling out to sailors and luring them to their watery graves. He’s heard how they sit on large rocks in shell bikinis and drink coconut water with a paper umbrella, as well. He’s never believed what science couldn’t back up, what he couldn’t see himself or what he couldn’t read about in books. The stories about mermaids were just that, stories.
And now one has its claws to his jugular. Fantastic.
Or, Max is a mermaid, Oscar is a sailor. You can fill in the rest.

Summary
“How long do we have left?” George asked. “How long until you can no longer talk, or laugh, or even say my name?”
He sighs. He can feel the tendrils of magic slowly making their way up his throat, pulsing, vibrating, but he doesn’t want to disappoint George. He can tell the others knew they were getting close too, from how they were growing antsy.
Closing his eyes, he swallows thickly, “Maybe a minute,” He admits, biting his lip. “Maybe less.”
George nods, eyes shimmering in disappointment, “Well then, it was nice to hear your voice, Wilbur.”
Wilbur smiles. “It was good to say your name, George.”

Summary
“Why did you ask me to be your knight?” Punz had asked, escorting George into the castle for the first time.
George plopped onto the golden throne with no hesitation, his smile lighting up the dreary room. He looked at Punz, who felt naked under his gaze, and says, “I trust you.”
The simplicity of the sentence weighs on Punz’s consciousness, how easy he said it. This was the same man that slept through elections, who ran away from conflict.
“I asked you because I know you’ll never let anything happen to me.”

Summary
Perhaps, if he had been paying closer attention, he would have noticed the bright flash of blue as it slipped underneath the waves. Maybe he would have noticed the eerie, glowing eye that stared up at him or the wide grin of sharpened canines.
But he wasn’t, and so the strange details of the ocean went unnoticed.
AKA George has a secret, and Wilbur is oblivious.
