Summary
When they were younger, like, when Liam was just a baby really, only five or six, and Noel was ten, he would kick and cry and shout nasty words he’d been learning at Da. Bad words, like twat and cocksucker and cunt. Da didn’t like that much, so Noel’d stopped with the swearing, and that’s when he’d started to speak funny with loads of stops in his words, but it had took him a bit longer after that to learn how not to cry.
OR
Five times Liam cried, and one time Noel did.

Summary
He turned to John, and this is where the memory is its blurriest. Did John look at him with regret, with longing, with hate, with emptiness? None of the above? All Paul can recall is the sweet John-ness of his smell, the way his big hands had come up and clung a bit to Paul’s back. Then, in his deep, raspy voice: “don’t do anything daft until I get back, you hear?” This, Paul was certain of. Certain of because he remembers turning it over and over in his mind as the ferry pulled away, as he peered out the window of the train, as he lay back in his bedroom at home, his dad and Mike down the hall. He’s right behind me. He’s coming back. He needs me too.
He'd been back a little over two weeks when that faith started to waver.

Summary
He felt a little foot kick his side gently. “Oi,” said the voice, young and nosy. Liam rolled back over and opened his eyes. The sky was worryingly blue.
“What.”
“What’re you doing lying down over here?” said the voice from somewhere to his right.
“Mate, I don’t even know where here is.”
“Cringle,” said the voice, confused. Liam was beginning to realize that a very young child was talking to him while he lay in some field. Hold on. -

Summary
At breakfast, James’ face was stiff with disapproval at her for spending yet another night at Jean’s, and who knows what else. Hardly anyone looked up to acknowledge her presence, and the hot Indian sun beat against her back. Her stomach felt twisted in knots, and she could scarcely eat. Jean never showed up.

Summary
Jean tilted her head down, then looked up at Paulie through her lashes, a knowing tilt to her jaw. “If you had to choose one bird you know to get with, who would it be?”
Paulie felt her eyes grow wide and her whole head went hot. “You what?!”
Jean leant back a bit, so that she was propped up on her elbows, one leg dangling loosely off the bed, the other one curved around Paulie’s hip. She raised her eyebrows, like go on then, what are you waiting for.
