Summary
“Buck?” he asked, putting the phone to his ear.
“Eddie.”
And fuck, it’s bad. Buck’s voice is wrecked, hoarse and rough in a way Eddie isn’t sure he’s ever heard. The closest he can think of is when he was stuck under the fire engine, in unimaginable pain and voice hoarse from screaming as they tried to lift the engine off of his leg.
“Buck, what’s wrong?” he asked, cursing himself at the immediate panic in his voice. But he couldn’t help but think of worse-case scenarios. Buck was the one calling him, so he atleast wasn’t dead.
But what about everyone else?
Buck’s breath hitched, a sob escaping him, loud and broken. “Eddie… it-it’s Bobby. He…”
Another sob wracked Buck, and somehow Eddie already knew. His chest seized with grief, his eyes filling with tears in preparation. But he had to know. He had to know for sure. “Buck…”
“He’s dead, Eddie. He’s dead.”

Summary
“Eddie, are you okay?”
He looked away from her, past her, at the open door to his office, and he wasn’t sure how to respond. No one here knew anything about his spiral, his complete and utter breakdown that left him sobbing on his bedroom floor with bloody knuckles and a baseball bat. May might know some of it if she happened to overhear Bobby and Athena, but if she did, she didn’t say anything or treat him any differently – even though he deserved to be treated differently after what he said to her stepfather.
“I’m gettin’ there,” he told her, knowing that his was more of a cop out than hers.
She raised an eyebrow at him, and he knew she didn’t believe him for a second. Nodding slowly, she seemed to decide something as she looked at the time on her phone. “Have you taken your lunch yet?”

Summary
A movement at the stairs caught Buck’s eye, and he looked past Chimney to see a girl stop hesitantly at the top of the stairs. She looked about average height, wearing jeans and solid black t-shirt under a green flannel, the top half of her hair pulled back. Her eyes moved across the loft, studying it in what looked like a weird mix of wonder and threat assessment.
After a moment of silence as everyone became aware of her presence, she cleared her throat, her grip tightening on her bag. It kind of reminded Buck of his first day on the job, and he couldn’t help the pang of empathy that struck him. She looked so young, and he wondered if he had looked that young back then, too.
“Hi,” she said, a tentative smile on her face as she took everyone in and stepped further into the loft. “I’m Malia Tate. New recruit.”

Summary
“Can we go ghost hunting?” Chris asked, his voice excited as he asked Buck. Neither of them had noticed Eddie, so he hung back, not wanting to interrupt the moment. He quietly shifted the things in his arms so could hold them longer.
“Whoa,” Buck asked, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise. “I don’t really know a lot about it, but I can do some research and then we can ask your dad. Where do you wanna go ghost hunting?”
“Here,” Chris explained, the unspoken duh evident in his tone. “At the house.”
Buck’s face twisted in confusion at the same time as Eddie’s. “Here? There aren’t ghosts here, are there?”
Chris simply nodded, his mood seeming to somber a little. “There didn’t used to be, but I think there are now.”
---
Eddie is struggling after leaving the 118 and refuses to talk about it. Chris makes his own assumptions as to why Eddie's always mad lately.

Summary
“How did you get home from the hospital?”
“Took an uber.”
“Does Maddie know?” Silence. “Does anyone?” More silence. More of Buck refusing to meet his gaze, staring at the door like he thought he could entice Eddie to leave by the power of suggestion. Well, good fucking luck, Eddie thought. Wild horses, and all that. “Why didn’t you call anyone?” he demanded. “Why didn’t you call me?”
“I did!” Buck snarled. The momentum of his indignation carried him into a sitting position, and Eddie could see him flinch with the pain of it. His unnaturally stoic front was gone, and something raw and wrenching took its place; it occurred to Eddie that he’d never heard Buck raise his voice before. “I did call you, Eddie! As I was bleeding out on my kitchen floor. You. Didn’t. Answer.”

The squatter in Buck's attic has a knife. Buck has a bit of a breakdown. Eddie has a plan to make everything right.

Summary
“Are you finally proposing?” Buck asks, and the air rushes out of Eddie like he’s been punched in the gut, a swift burst.
Hearing it from Buck makes it real, solidified, no longer a shapeless fantasy in his head.
"Proposing what?”
“Marriage, genius.” Buck snorts. “Duh.”
Buck peels Eddie's pomegranates, carves out the brown spots from his apples, eats the ugly, discolored fruit. Eddie wants to propose, spirals, and crashes a car about it.

Summary
Before Eddie can think of any more excuses, Buck bursts back through the surface of the water with Eddie’s body in his arms.
Eddie looks down at himself, still kneeling on the dock, and then at what is unmistakably also him in the water. Buck sucks in a great gasp of air, but the Eddie in the water doesn’t. His head slumps limp onto Buck’s shoulder, and the puzzle pieces of the last few minutes suddenly fall into place.
Finding himself back on the dock with no memory of how he got there. Buck unable to see or hear him. Eddie’s hand passing right through him.
Oh. He didn’t make it out of the water. He drowned.
