He feels fizzy, fizzy, fizzy, like a soda can that’s been shaken and cracked open. There’s so much pressure building inside his chest that he can’t possibly keep it all inside. He laughs, just a quiet giggle at first, and then it becomes something louder. Something brighter. Something that bursts out of his chest and cracks through the echoing silence in the bathroom. And ‘waiting’ feels too close to ‘pretending’, too much like doing nothing, and Tess always said doing nothing was a choice and not an excuse and—well, she said a lot of things. But either way, it feels like giving himself an out, so Cliff takes a deep breath and makes himself use the only play he thinks he has left:

There’s a sign in front of Shane. It says Welcome to Scott Hunter and Kip Grady’s Happily Ever After in a cursive font that makes Shane think of Etsy. Shane’s stomach churns. He briefly squeezes his empty ring finger. He feels, all at once, like he might cry. Instead, he swallows, and breathes, and pastes a smile on his face, and marches his ass down to Scott and Kip’s fucking wedding of the century.
