Yuna looked up from her plate, exchanging a glance with David, who also seemed unsure of what exactly Ilya was referring to.
“What do you mean, Ilya?” David asked.
“Me and Shane. Us being together.”
David set his utensils down. He looked genuinely concerned for the first time tonight, his brow furrowed. Yuna wasn’t quite sure that she understood, either.
“Well, I don’t think you’ve given us a good reason not to be okay with it,” David said.
“Maybe I had my doubts, but I think it’s obvious that you love him, you really do,” Yuna added.
“I love him, that is enough?” Ilya asked.
Is love enough? How was Yuna supposed to answer that?

Follow-up to "why do you hate him?". Yuna and David invite Ilya to dinner after finding out that he and Shane are in love. They need to know, is this real, and is Ilya as good for Shane as he says he is? Along the way, the find that there's much more hidden beneath his indifferent exterior. Still when David said, “And weren't there any nice men in Montreal?” it stung a little. But Ilya was aware of his reputation. He wasn't nice by a long stretch.
“I don't know,” Shane said in reply, clearly still grappling with how his entire full-proof plan had gone off its hinges and to a track he didn't know how to navigate. “Maybe there were several. But I only wanted him.”
Shane said it as if he'd tried his best for it to not be true beforehand. Only to realize it was all a moot point.

There hadn’t been a whole lot of tape, back then, not on a bunch of kids who were likely to get chewed up and spit out by the KHL, but Rozanov was a special case – his agent had clearly known his aim was for North American leagues, and there’d been a few tapes leaked here and there of the fourteen, fifteen, sixteen year old phenom who had more trick plays up his sleeve than Yuna, personally, thought was true hockey. The video of his spin on the Michigan had made the rounds in David’s McGill email chain, and Yuna had tipped her chin up and sworn up and down he’d be a one-trick pony who’d be flat on his ass the first time he tried that shit in the pros.
Shane had downloaded the video to his desktop and studied the tape like he did old games of Scott Hunter.
