"Frankly a little dumbfounded, Monica watches with her mouth slightly open as Binary taps some buttons on a monitor in the room, revealing what she can only guess are her vitals. A quiet panic begins to rise in her throat.
After one final swipe, Binary turns back around.
“I’m assuming the fact that we couldn’t get a conclusive X-ray has something to do with your ability to seal off universes?” She gravitates toward the door as she speaks, concluding her question by approaching the glass doors and prompting them to slide open. Monica looks back and forth between the woman she wishes deeply was her mother and the possibility she may never see her again."

"Her first feeling is warmth. It’s a jazz club. Kinda like Harpo’s but nicer, if for no other reason than it’s not hovering above a swamp. It’s packed, so there’s a heat emanating throughout the room but the warmth moreso comes from the fact that it’s cast in a golden glow. There are deep orange lights everywhere, although she can’t find any of the actual sources. Sultry jazz pours out from the small stage in front of them, and couples sway to the music in all kinds of different rhythms. Couples, she realizes, that look like them in more ways than one. Women kissing on each other and throwing their heads back in laughter. Even a few pairs of men dancing together with their eyes closed. And no air of fear or shame. Only freedom. Her new favorite word."

"Fine.” Elphaba said, crossing the room to sit directly in front of Galinda on the floor. She rested an elbow on both of Galinda's knees and popped her chin lazily on one arm.
