He reached for her hand and dropped it in her palm.
“Something to…I don’t know, keep you connected. To us.”
She held it between her fingers, the silver band warm from his own hands. It had a black square stone at its center which looked dark blue when the sun hit it.
“It’s beautiful,” she murmured.
“It’s a Vinkun family ring, given to the male in the family upon graduation,” he explained.
“Fiyero, no, I can’t accept this,” she tried to return it to his hand, which only made him laugh. Something so light it made her stop in her tracks.
“Please, I want you to have it.”

Summary
“She’s not here,” a soldier says, his voice echoing faintly through the trees.
“If she was, you’d smell her,” another replies. “All rotten and spoiled inside.”
Laughter follows—ugly, sharp, and mean. Then the sound of hooves, more footsteps trailing through the underbrush as the patrol begins to move on.
High up above the hunting party, out of their sight, Fiyero tenses, jaw tightening as the words sink in. But it’s Elphaba he watches—the way her lips curve downward almost imperceptibly, her shoulders pulling in as her gaze drops, like she’s bracing for him to pull away. Like part of her believed, even for a second, that those words might reach him too.When she hesitates, he tilts her chin up with quiet insistence, steady and unshakable.
“No,” he says looking her deep in the eyes, voice barely above a whisper, but every next syllable is anchored like stone. “They don’t know a single true thing about you.”--------------------------------------------------
