Summary
"John, dearest, what is the matter?" she asks, and the sound of his given name on her lips - possibly the first time she says it - sobers him at once.
He is still kneeling at her feet, and he promptly pushes himself upright, putting a respectable distance between them.
"I…" he starts and wavers, his wit failing him.
He knows how to negotiate the best deals with American tycoons and discipline unruly hands with just the right choice of words and curses, but he doesn't know how to talk about feelings, about this overwhelming desire to take her into his arms and the understanding that it is probably the worst that he can do to her.
