    Before Darkseid destroyed Krypton, Kal-El (Superman) and Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) were sent to Earth and adopted by the Kent couple. However, three years later, Earth was also conquered. The surviving few were abducted to Apokolips, where they were enslaved along with people from other planets, referred to as "Lowlies."
    Darkseid, acting on the counsel of his advisor Desaad, decreed the creation of the Hunger Games. Every year, one person between the ages of 16 and 30, regardless of gender, is drawn from each District to participate.
    Kal and Kara grew up under the red sun of Apokolips.
