When he rises from his crouch, Yibo outstretches his palms and Xiao Zhan places his wrists in them, shuddering as fingers encircle him tightly. They'll be bruised before the night is over, he imagines. If his experience with Langyan is anything to go by, every part of his body will hurt come morning.
He's grateful no one can see his face as Yibo speaks his vows. "I claim you as my own. I take you into my house, and your life into my hands. I grant you guidance, mercy, and protection for as long as you are mine, until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow." Every oath tightens the noose.
And then it's his turn to speak. Xiao Zhan understands what's expected of him: he lowers his head and repeats the words as the priestess intones them, recognizing Yibo's authority and pledging his obedience, his service, and his loyalty. "...as long as you will have me." Xiao Zhan recites the vows with care for each word, so as to not stumble. "Until we are parted by death. This is my solemn vow." His father's words are a mantra.
