Summary
John's been obsessed with Sherlock since the first time he saw him, when Sherlock showed up to take his mum's soul. But Sherlock was a spectre and John's a human, and John just couldn't do it anymore.
Fortunately, Lestrade refused to take no for an answer.
"I," Lestrade said, and then paused. "So you're in love with him, then. With Sherlock, I mean."
An embarrassed flush seeped into John's face. He said nothing.
"Because there might be an answer to this. But you'd have to be for it to work."
John kept looking at him. He'd relaxed a little, though, the wary tension in his muscles easing. "Yeah, I guess I am," he said with a bitter smile. "God, what that says about me..."
It said a lot of things, Lestrade thought, not the least of which was that John Watson was an idiot in his own right. "You know that to be with Sherlock, you can't be alive anymore."
"Yeah. I figured that."

Summary
In Plainjane's Omegaverse fic "Held in Trust" Mycroft Holmes and Greg Lestrade are an established bonded couple. In Chapter Eight Greg explains to John how the relationship nearly foundered. I was intrigued by this and curious to know more. So here is my version of events - a tribute to Plainjane's work which I hope is acceptable. (I should have said - it might help to read that first).
PS This was the first fan fic I wrote when I was very new to this and I realised I shouldn't have written an AU of PlainJane's AU without her permission. I am grateful to her for not calling me out on it.
