The first time Arthur let him and John be separated, he did it so John could live.
That had been easier to bear. It had been a worthy sacrifice, after all.
He had missed John then, but he hadn’t had the space to truly feel it. Not with Lilith filling the gnawing void in his head. Not with his mind fixed on doing what was best for John--and on stopping Kayne. It had been easier to suppress the emptiness back then, when faced with such overwhelming purpose.

I am Steve Harrington, he reminded himself, peering around the clinically furnished, fluorescent-lit room. I am an experiment participant at Psycho-Sims. The life I remember isn’t real; it was a simulation to facilitate a social experiment. My memory of it will be wiped, soon. Vecna isn’t real. Hell, the Upside-Down isn’t real. Max isn’t comatose, and Eddie isn’t dead. And that’s about everything in the world that I know for sure, right now.
AKA: The entire Stranger Things show is a simulation by an organization that performs human experimentation. The crew wakes up in a dystopian universe after Eddie dies, and now they have to come to terms with what their lives actually are.
AKA: I couldn’t write a normal fanfiction plot to save my life

Jon thought of these things, as he made up his mind. At the end of all things. The end of the world. He let them sink in, and he let them go.
Because things would not get better. They wouldn’t get nicer, or easier, or happier. They were going to be unimaginably horrible and then they would go away, and so would he.
And so would the Web.
And no one would have to endure this savage echelon of horror ever again, in this universe or in any other.
