Steve had great hair. It was a lot lighter, straighter, and shorter than his own, and pieces of it fell onto his forehead as he spoke, but he would always brush them back up with his fingers within a couple of seconds. He had a few dark freckles on his left cheek and a splatter of lighter ones across his nose and just below his mouth. His sweater was a nice soft cream color, like the shade of a good vanilla ice cream, and it looked soft to the touch. If Eddie just reached out, he could—
“Eddie? Are you listening?” Steve interrupted, and Eddie’s head snapped up from his hand.
He definitely was not. “Yeah, uh, sorry. What were you saying?”

Steve and Eddie meet officially for the first time in their shared biology class. Eddie almost immediately takes interest, and is eternally grateful when his newfound "friend" saves him from what would've likely been the beating of his lifetime from his sworn enemy, Tommy H. They skip school due to Eddie's suggestion and end up having an unexpectedly romantic encounter at Eddie's favorite place in the entirety of the shithole they both call home.

"So, what d'you wanna do when we get home? Play Mario? Swim? Burn our backpacks and everything inside them?" Richie asked as he skipped along the sidewalk, avoiding every crack possible, despite the weathered state of the concrete. Eddie, on the other hand, was stepping on every single line he could.
"All of the above?" Eddie answered, and Richie nodded in agreement.
"Then after, I'll go have sex with your mom." He glanced back at Eddie and winked, which made Eddie roll his eyes (and maybe his heart skipped a beat too, he wasn't entirely sure).

Eddie and Richie had been best friends for all of second grade before their first kiss. There were plenty more pecks that were all followed by plenty of giggles and jokes - until everything seemed to change. Eddie reflected on them constantly, and Richie seemed to forget about them altogether. The one thing Eddie could not figure out, no matter how long he spent overthinking it: why?

“okay mum, i’ll get on the first train home tomorrow morning. i’m just getting home from work now, i’ll begin packing straight away,” he did everything in his power to keep his voice unwavering, if not for him, then for his own mother, but it was difficult. “i’m- mum i’m so sorry. about all of this.”
she didn’t reply, but he could hear sniffles coming from the speakers on his phone. he shrunk further into himself with each noise until he couldn’t bear it anymore. he had never witnessed his mom like this. she had always been the poised, calm figure in his life, staying laid back when his grandfather couldn’t. but he understood why that was falling apart now.
“i love you mum. i’ll see you tomorrow.”

he stayed in town as much as possible, going to visit his grandad in the hospital whenever he could. one day, his grandfather introduced him to his favorite nurse, a boy around george’s age who had just started working there a couple of weeks ago. his name was dream, which his grandad especially liked, laughing whenever it came up in conversation. it was nice to see him laughing again.

"as he got closer to the sleeping boy, he noticed he seemed to be around dream’s same age. maybe a bit younger, if he were to guess by his stature and soft-looking face. though the better half of his head was covered in a blue baseball cap, dream could see tufts of dark brown - almost black - hair poking out from under it. his eyes were shut tight with heavy eye-bags underneath and he had a slight frown on his face, brows drawing together and corners of his mouth turned down, but somehow he was still, cómo se dice… pretty?"
or: dream and george were both headed to university, one filled with excitement and one filled with dread. when shy glances turn into conversations that reveal a number of coincidences that seemed less than natural, the boys find they'll be spending much more time together than was originally expected.
