Nick was all too aware of the trembling and desperate way in which Matt needed Chris almost all of the time. He knew too much of how agitated and irritable Chris could get if he for any reason couldn’t be there for him. The fierce way they kept each other close and Matt’s sun would not fully rise until his ears caught the first melodic sound of Chris’ voice in the morning. The way Chris’ day could not end and his mind wouldn’t give in to sleep until he could not only hear but also feel Matt’s calm breathing and steady heart as it beat rhythmically with sleep. Most importantly, Nick fucking knew that none of it was healthy. That their codependency was grave even for a pair of brothers that had never spent so much as a single day apart. Nick knew that Matt and Chris struggled to find ways to survive individually; to work on how to bear being apart from each other. No one in their family ever did or said anything about it because that’s just how Chris and Matt have always functioned; everyone has simply grown accustomed to their closeness and dependence on the other. Yet Nick knew his brothers’ relationship was a ticking time bomb.
