“Okay,” Eddie says, slapping Bill on the back as they arrive at the end of Eddie’s driveway. “You gonna be okay going the last couple blocks by yourself?”
The question is routine by now, asked every single day since 1989. The answer is too, Bill waving away Eddie’s concern with a smile that crinkles his eyes. “Yeah, I’m good. You know m-m-m-me.”
That’s the problem, Eddie thinks, watching him go. I do know you.

Rip it off like a band-aid, Stan bids himself. “I think that I’m in love with all of you,” he says. Once the heaviest boulder is skipped off into the river, he can handle the smaller, lighter ones. “It started a few years ago. I thought I was just crazy or something, but we’re all so close and we went through Derry and we got through it together. I think if we’re together we can overcome anything.”

Summary
Whatever little control Richie felt he had over his own body dissolved rapidly and humiliatingly around June, which is coincidentally also when Eddie deemed it warm enough to start wearing shorts regularly. Like a bundle of kindling, Richie was consumed by ferocious, hungry heat as the days curled and blackened at the edges under the Maine sun.
