“Sorry about the mess,” Neal apologized, glancing down at the water dripping onto the floor beneath both he and Peter. They stood just inside the threshold of the front door of the Burke home, and they were absolutely drenched.
It was no wonder, Elizabeth thought, as a loud clap of thunder rang out. It was pouring outside. “Hon, what happened to that umbrella I got you to keep in the car?” Elizabeth asked, turning her attention to Peter.
“It’s still in the car,” Peter replied, gingerly peeling off his suit jacket. “I would have grabbed it, but it was barely sprinkling when we got out, and—”
“And Peter chose today of all days to park all the way down the street,” Neal interrupted.

Summary
Every time he sent Neal undercover, Peter double, sometimes triple checked that Neal was clear on whatever trigger phrase they’d chosen that day. Whether it was Neal or another agent going under, the importance of a lifeline, of a way to covertly say something is wrong, get me the hell out of here, was never lost on Peter.
Peter could count on one hand the amount of times Neal had actually used one, though. So when Neal said “concealment” in the middle of what had sounded like a meeting that was going off without a hitch, Peter’s stomach dropped, and he sat up instantly.
Written for the January White Collar flash fiction prompt, 'Overworked'.
