“Nami-san, there are people here for the Sunny. Bring Luffy over here!” Sanji shouted, kicking a marine's face into the counter.
“No! You need to run!” Nami coughed harshly, and Sanji stilled, glancing at the den den mushi in confusion.
“But what about the ship?”
“They aren’t there for the Sunny! They’re there for-” The snail cut off when the marine lieutenant snapped the receiver back in place, and Sanji stood up to full height, watching the man carefully from the other side of the counter.
Marines filed into the room from both entrances, standing a respectful distance away from the lieutenant. The candlelight from the countertop flickered energetically, making the shadows of the surrounding soldiers dance on the walls of the galley.
Sanji narrowed his eyes at the lieutenant, watching the smoke rise up from the top of his cigar and disperse into the air as the silence thickened with tension. “You’re here for…?” Sanji asked through gritted teeth, making his irritation for cutting off his navigator known.
The lead marine shrugged easily, a large smile stretching on his face. “You.” He finished, “I’m here to save you.”

Sunlight halos behind his captain’s head, lighting golden straw ablaze, almost too bright to look at. Sanji’s eyes water. Luffy places a hand on his head, gentle fingers against his scalp. Says, “Sanji was bein’ pretty stupid earlier.”
“I’m sorry, Captain,” Sanji breathes, leaning forward into Luffy’s touch. “Won’t happen again.” When did he shift from sitting to kneeling? It feels wrong to move, though. It’s only right to kneel before one’s captain, one’s king.

Coincidentally, the next island the Strawhats land on has the answers, but not before an errant bodyswap and mistaken identity complicates matters, and Usopp manages to get kidnapped and has to face Sanji's past for him.

He did something wrong.

“Not now,” Luffy interrupts, turning back and heading out of the bar.
He swallows around the knot in his throat and dips his head, pulse fluttering anxiously as he follows behind, not sure of what he’s in for once they get back to the Sunny.
