“Max,” he looked up again, the other driver shook a bag of almonds in front of him.
“I’m good, mate.”
“Uhuh, have a handful anyway.”
"Fuck off," Max replied, Charles really did bring out the worst in him.
"Hey," his voice firm, direct in a way that sent a jolt through the Dutchman.
"Have five. They'll help you focus."
Only Charles could make him feel guilty over some fucking almonds he really didn’t want.…really didn’t need.
He was so weak sometimes.

Max was a master of control. Of his environment, of his car, of himself... maybe that was the problem. It was exhausting to be in control all the time.

He turned, finally meeting Max’s eyes with devastating gentleness. “I’ll always love you. But I’m not in love with you anymore. You have to accept that. Stop waiting for me to come back. Stop killing yourself on hope. You’ll always have my best wishes, but not my future.”
And with that, Charles walked away. Left Max in the kitchen, shattered, stranded among ghosts of memories that still burned on his lips.
