“Do you ever wonder who they are?” Gaila asks, as she lounges against the grass of the quad. Her crimson hair is arranged in a tangled halo above her head. Nyota glances at her idly from her seated position. They’re out sunbathing on a lazy afternoon before class, surrounded by the gentle hum of cadets bustling about.
Nyota drums her fingers against her uniformed thigh. “Who?”
“Your soulmate, Ny.” Her roommate shifts upwards and props her weight on her hands. “You don’t wonder where they are? What they’re doing?”
“I-” Nyota pauses and adjusts the pad splayed across her lap. “I guess I don’t really think about it.”
“Well, you should.”

“You’re the one who’s saving his life.” He cracks a smile then starts the long walk to the turbolift. As he goes, he turns to her one more time. “Goodluck, Nyota.”
She watches the broad line of his shoulders disappear behind a bend in the corridor. She’s finally alone in the hallway, staring at the door in front of her. Spock lies just beyond the metal plating. The only man she’s ever really loved. The man she chose to leave, two years, ten months, and seven days ago. The man she came here to save.

“He’s hot, isn’t he?” Gaila says, eyes tracking the Commander as he makes his way down the concrete pathway.
“I guess, in a boring, incredibly uptight, kind of way.” Nyota takes a few steps in the direction of their dorm, eyes fleeting back to the sight of his broad shoulders disappearing behind the aeronautics lab. Gaila just smiles at her, and Nyota can feel blood rush to her cheeks.
“Didn’t you have him as a professor last semester?” Gaila asks, as she turns to follow her down the footpath.
“I did,” Nyota answers. “Advanced Phonology. He was brilliant, a real legend in the department.”
Gaila stops her with a hand on her arm. “But you don’t think he’s hot.”
“I didn’t say that.”
