‘Maud made it for me,’ Alan said. ‘She’s giving knitting a go, apparently.’
‘Is she, indeed?’ Jack smirked. ‘How lucky for Maud to have such a willing and attractive recipient.’
Alan’s mouth crept up at the corner too, and when he spoke it was as if savouring something delicious. ‘It’s so sweet that you somehow think you’ve got out of this.’
‘What—?’ Jack started, but Alan was already calling down the hall.
‘Maud!’ he shouted, holding Jack’s gaze. ‘His lordship wants his Christmas present.’

fearVery Reasonable Concern of his, and only teases him for it a little bit.Their bickering carried them along the landing, through Jack’s private drawing room and into the bedroom, at which point Jack came to an abrupt stop two feet inside and Alan walked directly into the back of him.
‘What was that for?’ Alan demanded, expecting Jack to turn around and bully him in the direction of the bed.
But Jack stayed exactly where he was, absolutely still, and Alan peered around and up at him. ‘Jack?’
‘There is,’ Jack said softly, ‘a spider.’

‘Cheetham wasn’t nearly as interesting without you,’ Jack said. Another languid sweep of his palm over Alan’s spine. ‘I think the Hall rather missed you as well.’
Alan’s eyes flew fully open. ‘Missed me how, exactly?’
‘Or perhaps it just knew that I was missing you,’ Jack said, which didn’t answer the question at all. ‘You ought to come with me when I go up again in a few weeks.’
‘Ought to?’ Alan repeated. It just about came out mocking, rather than alarmed. ‘Is that a requirement, my lord?’
He didn’t dare clarify that he meant from the Hall, not from Jack.

‘I suppose “arsehole” might have been taken for a mistype of “Alston” if you’d really pleaded ignorance.’ Jack resumed the slow, firm circles of his hands against Alan’s shoulders.
‘I don’t mean that,’ Alan said.
‘No?’
‘No.’ Alan arched into Jack’s hands. ‘I’m talking about how as soon as I saw you I wanted you so much I couldn’t think about anything else.’
