Alan’s mouth crept up at the corner too, and when he spoke it was as if savouring something delicious. ‘It’s so sweet that you somehow think you’ve got out of this.’
‘What—?’ Jack started, but Alan was already calling down the hall.
‘Maud!’ he shouted, holding Jack’s gaze. ‘His lordship wants his Christmas present.’

‘What was that for?’ Alan demanded, expecting Jack to turn around and bully him in the direction of the bed.
But Jack stayed exactly where he was, absolutely still, and Alan peered around and up at him. ‘Jack?’
‘There is,’ Jack said softly, ‘a spider.’

‘Cheetham wasn’t nearly as interesting without you,’ Jack said. Another languid sweep of his palm over Alan’s spine. ‘I think the Hall rather missed you as well.’
Alan’s eyes flew fully open. ‘Missed me how, exactly?’
‘Or perhaps it just knew that I was missing you,’ Jack said, which didn’t answer the question at all. ‘You ought to come with me when I go up again in a few weeks.’
‘Ought to?’ Alan repeated. It just about came out mocking, rather than alarmed. ‘Is that a requirement, my lord?’
He didn’t dare clarify that he meant from the Hall, not from Jack.

‘How long did you play for?’ he asked Edwin. Questions almost tripped over themselves on their way out of his mouth. ‘And why did you stop? Were you any good? How did I not know about this?’
‘Er.’ Edwin blinked. ‘I played for about twelve years, I mostly stopped when I went to Oxford and it wasn’t as easy to practice, and you didn’t know about it because—I don’t know.’ He ran a hand through his hair, looking harried. ‘I suppose it just didn’t come up.’
Violet snorted. ‘Oh, of course. Never during the entire three months we were trying to unlock the secrets of a musical house named for a keyboard instrument.’

Summary
After the Barrel blows up, and after the plan to head to Cheetham, and after talking to Jack, Edwin finally lets himself rest for a while. Set after chapter 17 of A Power Unbound.
‘Did you decide on train times?’ Edwin asked, resting his head against Robin’s chest. Lying horizontal, listening to the reassuring thud of Robin’s heartbeat, he found the heaviness of his body became more comfortable, something he wanted to settle into, his eyes drifting shut of their own accord even as his mind still raced.
‘Yes,’ Robin said. He stroked a hand absently through his hair. ‘We leave early tomorrow morning. I hope you’re prepared for a circuitous tour of East Anglia to throw Bastoke off the scent.’
‘It’ll give me time to research, I suppose.’
‘As opposed to if we went to Cheetham Hall directly, in which case I’m sure you’d spend that same time occupying yourself with something else,’ Robin teased. ‘Billiards, perhaps.’

‘Reformed.’ Alan reeled off adjectives, counting on his fingers. ‘Witty, erudite. Courteous—but I’d hate to misrepresent you, my lord,’ he added, shooting Jack a mischievous smile. ‘You’re welcome to set the record straight, if you’d like.’

‘Well,’ Robin said, reaching for him, ‘suppose something were to keep you in the city this year.’
Edwin’s smile found its way onto his face as he looked down at where Robin’s hand curled around his own. He glanced back up at him. ‘Is something going to keep me in the city?’

After a stinging encounter with a member of the House of Lords while researching for a story, Alan finds himself questioning whether he's earned his career. Jack sets him straight.
‘Ah.’ Pemberton raised his eyebrows, and his gaze flicked from Alan’s face down to his feet and back up again. ‘Your reputation precedes you, Mr. Ross. Careful what you say to this one,’ he warned the other two peers. ‘Lord Hawthorn’s pet journalist, you know.’
The spiel Alan had ready to go about his dedication to accuracy and objectivity died in his throat.
Pemberton’s words weren’t suggestive. They weren’t even derisive. Worse: they were spoken like a basic statement of fact, as though Pemberton had pointed out that Alan was holding a notepad, or had curly hair.

‘Of course it is,’ Edwin said firmly. He’d had plenty of time to dwell on the matter himself, and it had been a long time since he’d had to argue himself around on it. ‘And if it isn’t, you’re not likely to resolve it by hiding under the bedcovers.’

Edwin felt himself relenting, and not just because the image was rather appealing.

‘I thought November 6th.’
She makes her selection from the bag after several seconds of contemplation and raises her eyebrows at him. ‘You’re counting the first time we slept together?’

Her expression is wry as she pops the chip in her mouth. ‘I’ll bet it did.’
‘It was a very special night!’ he exclaims, a little high-pitched.

‘There were other reasons the betrothal made sense that haven’t changed,’ he reminded her.
‘Rather less serious ones,’ she argued, folding her fingers in her lap. ‘In any case: you agreed to this under very different circumstances, and I felt it would be remiss of me not to reopen the discussion.’
This time Edwin’s face did betray some of what he was feeling, his eyes widening and then softening minutely. ‘They weren’t less serious,’ he said, after a moment, quiet and earnest. ‘They certainly weren’t less important. They’re not less important now.’

‘No, no.’ There was a determined look in Edwin’s eye that meant he’d regrouped and was about to tackle a problem from an entirely new angle, and a gleam that had Robin intrigued. ‘I’d be a poor teacher if I couldn’t work with what naturally motivates my student.’
He took a step backwards. Slowly, eyes never leaving Robin’s, he undid the top three buttons of his shirt, parting the starched white fabric.
