    Summary

In late 1909, the Blyths throw a party, everyone reaps the benefits of Maud's new hobby, and Jack rediscovers the Christmas spirit.

‘Maud made it for me,’ Alan said. ‘She’s giving knitting a go, apparently.’

‘Is she, indeed?’ Jack smirked. ‘How lucky for Maud to have such a willing and attractive recipient.’

Alan’s mouth crept up at the corner too, and when he spoke it was as if savouring something delicious. ‘It’s so sweet that you somehow think you’ve got out of this.’

‘What—?’ Jack started, but Alan was already calling down the hall.

‘Maud!’ he shouted, holding Jack’s gaze. ‘His lordship wants his Christmas present.’

    Summary

After wrapping up an afternoon of research, Edwin learns how Robin's kept himself occupied. Set a few months post-A Marvellous Light.

‘What are you drawing?’ Edwin asked Robin now, craning his neck to peer at the sketchbook.

‘Oh—ah.’ For a second, Robin looked sheepish. But embarrassment wasn’t generally a concept he entertained, and the expression slid off him almost as quickly as it appeared. ‘You.’

    Summary

Alan comes to Jack's aid upon learning about a fear Very Reasonable Concern of his, and only teases him for it a little bit.

Their bickering carried them along the landing, through Jack’s private drawing room and into the bedroom, at which point Jack came to an abrupt stop two feet inside and Alan walked directly into the back of him.

‘What was that for?’ Alan demanded, expecting Jack to turn around and bully him in the direction of the bed.

But Jack stayed exactly where he was, absolutely still, and Alan peered around and up at him. ‘Jack?’

‘There is,’ Jack said softly, ‘a spider.’

    Summary

Alan develops a deeper understanding of Cheetham Hall. Or, more accurately, comes to an understanding with it.

‘Cheetham wasn’t nearly as interesting without you,’ Jack said. Another languid sweep of his palm over Alan’s spine. ‘I think the Hall rather missed you as well.’

Alan’s eyes flew fully open. ‘Missed me how, exactly?’

‘Or perhaps it just knew that I was missing you,’ Jack said, which didn’t answer the question at all. ‘You ought to come with me when I go up again in a few weeks.’

Ought to?’ Alan repeated. It just about came out mocking, rather than alarmed. ‘Is that a requirement, my lord?’

He didn’t dare clarify that he meant from the Hall, not from Jack.

    Summary

Alan sheds some light on his early thoughts about Jack.

‘Of course,’ he said, ‘the stuff I actually wanted to put in my article wouldn’t have been at all appropriate for polite society.’

‘I suppose “arsehole” might have been taken for a mistype of “Alston” if you’d really pleaded ignorance.’ Jack resumed the slow, firm circles of his hands against Alan’s shoulders.

‘I don’t mean that,’ Alan said.

    ‘No?’

‘No.’ Alan arched into Jack’s hands. ‘I’m talking about how as soon as I saw you I wanted you so much I couldn’t think about anything else.’

    Summary

Whiling away an evening together, the group learns something about Edwin they didn’t expect. Robin, naturally, is especially intrigued.

‘How long did you play for?’ he asked Edwin. Questions almost tripped over themselves on their way out of his mouth. ‘And why did you stop? Were you any good? How did I not know about this?’

‘Er.’ Edwin blinked. ‘I played for about twelve years, I mostly stopped when I went to Oxford and it wasn’t as easy to practice, and you didn’t know about it because—I don’t know.’ He ran a hand through his hair, looking harried. ‘I suppose it just didn’t come up.’

Violet snorted. ‘Oh, of course. Never during the entire three months we were trying to unlock the secrets of a musical house named for a keyboard instrument.’

    Summary

After the Barrel blows up, and after the plan to head to Cheetham, and after talking to Jack, Edwin finally lets himself rest for a while. Set after chapter 17 of A Power Unbound.

‘Did you decide on train times?’ Edwin asked, resting his head against Robin’s chest. Lying horizontal, listening to the reassuring thud of Robin’s heartbeat, he found the heaviness of his body became more comfortable, something he wanted to settle into, his eyes drifting shut of their own accord even as his mind still raced.

‘Yes,’ Robin said. He stroked a hand absently through his hair. ‘We leave early tomorrow morning. I hope you’re prepared for a circuitous tour of East Anglia to throw Bastoke off the scent.’

‘It’ll give me time to research, I suppose.’

‘As opposed to if we went to Cheetham Hall directly, in which case I’m sure you’d spend that same time occupying yourself with something else,’ Robin teased. ‘Billiards, perhaps.’

    Summary

Alan has insomnia. Jack has a nightmare. Conveniently enough, both problems have the same solution.

‘Anyway,’ Alan added, squeezing Jack’s fingers, ‘you didn’t wake me. I was awake already.’

‘What on earth for?’ Jack asked, removing the hand covering his face and frowning at him.

‘Fancied a spot of stargazing,’ Alan said. ‘What do you think? I couldn’t sleep.’

    ‘Couldn’t sleep?’

    ‘No.’

‘Why?’ Jack half sat up. ‘Do you need an extra pillow?’

‘Do I n—’ Alan broke off, incredulous. ‘Who are you planning on mugging for that? Every pillow in London is already on this bed.’

    Summary

Alan covers a charity ball for Tatler where everyone, it seems, wants a piece of Lord Hawthorn.

Luckily for Alan, Lord Hawthorn only wants a piece of him.

‘You’ve abandoned your dance partner,’ Alan noted lightly, running a finger along the back of a cloth-covered sofa. ‘Bit rude of you.’

‘I’m renowned for my rudeness,’ Jack reminded him.

‘Heard you’d reformed. Everyone’s saying so.’

‘I don’t know where you’re getting your information. Perhaps Tatler needs better sources.’

‘Reformed.’ Alan reeled off adjectives, counting on his fingers. ‘Witty, erudite. Courteous—but I’d hate to misrepresent you, my lord,’ he added, shooting Jack a mischievous smile. ‘You’re welcome to set the record straight, if you’d like.’

    Summary

Han's preparations for an upcoming mission strike Leia as a little odd.

‘Anyway, it’s not about the drink—it’s about getting people talking about it. Lando has plans for a—what’s it he calls it, now?’ Han snapped his fingers. ‘A viral marketing campaign.’

    ‘Absolutely not,’ Leia said flatly.

    His face fell. ‘Why not?’

‘Why shouldn’t you market an undercover operation?’

‘Well, when you put it that way it sounds bad,’ he admitted.

    Summary

Robin and Edwin plan their first Christmas together. Set post-A Marvellous Light.

‘Hm,’ Robin said, tapping his mouth with his index finger as though deep in thought, taking a slow step closer still. ‘Let’s see. What do you normally do?’

‘Oh, go up to Penhallick for as few days as I can get away with, usually—though I can’t imagine how I’m going to face Walter this year.’ Edwin grimaced. ‘Making polite dinnertime conversation is already uncomfortable enough without the small matter of him trying to kill me three months ago.’

‘Well,’ Robin said, reaching for him, ‘suppose something were to keep you in the city this year.’

Edwin’s smile found its way onto his face as he looked down at where Robin’s hand curled around his own. He glanced back up at him. ‘Is something going to keep me in the city?’

    Summary

After a stinging encounter with a member of the House of Lords while researching for a story, Alan finds himself questioning whether he's earned his career. Jack sets him straight.

‘Ah.’ Pemberton raised his eyebrows, and his gaze flicked from Alan’s face down to his feet and back up again. ‘Your reputation precedes you, Mr. Ross. Careful what you say to this one,’ he warned the other two peers. ‘Lord Hawthorn’s pet journalist, you know.’

The spiel Alan had ready to go about his dedication to accuracy and objectivity died in his throat.

Pemberton’s words weren’t suggestive. They weren’t even derisive. Worse: they were spoken like a basic statement of fact, as though Pemberton had pointed out that Alan was holding a notepad, or had curly hair.

    Summary

In addition to the search for the Last Contract, Robin sets himself a second, private mission. Set right after the end of chapter 27 of AML.

It felt like a simple, observable truth of the world. The sky was blue, and water was wet, and Robin had waited for Edwin Courcey for an eternity and would keep hold of him an eternity more.

He pulled his mouth from Edwin’s to breathe, almost trembling with sincerity, ‘I like you so much.’

    Summary

Robin has some pre-wedding jitters. Edwin helps him through them.

‘It’s nothing. Really,’ he insisted, at the sceptical arch of Edwin’s brows. ‘I suppose I’m just…’ He broke off, shaking his head. ‘This all feels rather strange,’ he muttered. ‘I suppose I’m wondering if it’s the right thing to do.’

‘Of course it is,’ Edwin said firmly. He’d had plenty of time to dwell on the matter himself, and it had been a long time since he’d had to argue himself around on it. ‘And if it isn’t, you’re not likely to resolve it by hiding under the bedcovers.’

    Summary

Stressed over the enormous task of establishing a new magical system, Edwin—with a little support—takes some time to figure things out.

‘Just ten more minutes,’ he said, glancing up, ‘and then I’ll—’

He broke off when he realised Robin was flanked by Adelaide and Maud.

He regarded them warily. ‘I’m sensing an ambush.’

‘Sharp as a tack, as always, Edwin,’ Adelaide said cheerfully. ‘You’re taking a holiday.’

‘I will very soon,’ Edwin assured them, as he had a dozen times before.

‘No, now,’ Robin said, in his most firm baronet tone. ‘I’ll throw you over my shoulder and carry you to the station myself if I have to.’

Edwin felt himself relenting, and not just because the image was rather appealing.

    Summary

Mid-October, 2007. True to form, Josh and Donna can't agree on when to celebrate their anniversary.

He frowns back at her. ‘Wait. Hang on. What day are you saying is our anniversary?’

‘October 17th. The day we first kissed,’ she says, setting her sights on his chips again. ‘Why, what’re you saying?’

    ‘I thought November 6th.’

She makes her selection from the bag after several seconds of contemplation and raises her eyebrows at him. ‘You’re counting the first time we slept together?’

‘Yeah, I—’ He breaks off, explaining hastily, ‘Not—not in a—a lecherous way; it was just, y’know. It seemed—obvious.’

Her expression is wry as she pops the chip in her mouth. ‘I’ll bet it did.’

‘It was a very special night!’ he exclaims, a little high-pitched.

After a second encounter with Arthur Manning, Edwin needles Robin about him.

‘Shocked as I’m sure we all are to discover I wasn’t a blushing virgin when we met,’ Robin murmured, when they came up for air, ‘might I remind you that one of your ex-lovers is our very regular dinner guest?’

‘That’s different,’ Edwin told him, tracing the bow of his upper lip with a finger. ‘Jack still barely puts up with me. Manning looks at you like he’d like to have you for dessert and then go back for seconds.’

‘He’s happily married, as I understand it.’

‘Still,’ Edwin said. ‘Only I get to have you for dessert.’

    Summary

Edwin's given Robin and Adelaide's engagement the go-ahead. But with the Last Contract business cleared up, Addy double checks.

‘There were other reasons the betrothal made sense that haven’t changed,’ he reminded her.

‘Rather less serious ones,’ she argued, folding her fingers in her lap. ‘In any case: you agreed to this under very different circumstances, and I felt it would be remiss of me not to reopen the discussion.’

This time Edwin’s face did betray some of what he was feeling, his eyes widening and then softening minutely. ‘They weren’t less serious,’ he said, after a moment, quiet and earnest. ‘They certainly weren’t less important. They’re not less important now.’

    Summary

As Edwin teaches him about magic, Robin finds himself distracted. Edwin proposes something a little more, uh, hands on.

‘Perhaps we should give it a rest for today,’ Robin suggested, when they parted. His hand slid round to splay over Edwin’s lower back, keeping him close as he lowered his voice. ‘Go and try something I feel more knowledgeable about.’

‘No, no.’ There was a determined look in Edwin’s eye that meant he’d regrouped and was about to tackle a problem from an entirely new angle, and a gleam that had Robin intrigued. ‘I’d be a poor teacher if I couldn’t work with what naturally motivates my student.’

He took a step backwards. Slowly, eyes never leaving Robin’s, he undid the top three buttons of his shirt, parting the starched white fabric.

    Summary

There are powerful alliances at stake for the fledgling New Republic—but only if a certain prominent hero of the rebellion is open to a political marriage.

The first Tapani proposal was made by way of a ten-being delegation from the planet Obulette.

They brought several lavish gift baskets into Leia’s office, and performed a drawn-out ceremony involving dancing, kazz trumpets, and little in the way of explanation as to what this meeting was about.

It was only after Leia’s polite, bewildered applause that the head of the delegation, Hirva Frane, announced with much flourish that The Most Noble Aterion Balis of House Mecetti of the Tapani Sector would like to put forward an offer of marriage.
