Summary
“Will you tell me about what it is that haunts you?” Thomas asks, as forward as ever when shepherding James through his own recalcitrance. There’s no surprise in this, considering that the only things that James has not yet shared are the parts of his history that spook him from the darkness within which he keeps them.
The parts that cannot be spoken without also speaking of John Silver.
A name that is a ghost in his blood; a shadow that breathes alongside him and tethers part of him to the shadows. To expose him now, even to Thomas, may at last serve to banish that ghost to somewhere James cannot follow. Somewhere he’s desired to leave Silver since the moment everything ended, but cannot. Will not. The echo of him is as perplexing and infuriating as the man himself.
And damn it all, James misses him.

Spock’s palm found Jim’s rib, gently touching the fabric above his skin in a way so light it was barely discernible. Jim moved it upward a few inches so it rested above his actual heart instead of the Vulcan one Spock had instinctively reached for. They shared a brief glance, and for a second it almost looked like Spock was going to let out a chuckle.

Jim snorted at that - any man would. Spock could be on his deathbed and he’d still decline Bones’ tender mercies. He heaved himself upright, suppressing the urge to wince, and said, “He’ll be here soon anyway. Anything you want to mention before he does?”
“Yes.” Spock, likewise, sat up. “I appear to be under some compulsion to speak the truth.”

There are consequences to using untested drugs to save your father's life, and Spock is about to meet them full throttle. Jim can only try and keep his too-honest Vulcan from insulting crew, ambassadors, admirals, and parents.
It's a full-time job.
