“You may ask me anything, Cody.”
“What has this war taught you?”
He is silent for a long time. So long that Cody may begin to worry that he has spoken out of turn. If he does, his durasteel nerves conceal it well. Eventually, Obi-Wan hands him the carefully chosen words.
“That there is darkness in the heart of every man. That no one is above corruption but that likewise no one is past the point of redemption. That relationships … are vital, even for Jedi; no man is a distant star unto himself. That every life is worth something and so is worth protecting.”
There is darkness in Cody. But there is also light. He watches it blaze brightly behind his eyes.
“You never disappoint, sir,” Cody says with a little laugh, a little glimpse past his professionally reserved demeanor that Obi-Wan always values. “Whatever happens tomorrow, I’m with you.”
