Mike searched his eyes. “Will, I’m right here. I’m here.”
“I know.” Will said, too quickly, as though he was compensating for something. He knew that Mike was with him, yet something was deeply, seriously wrong.
“I know.” He said again, quieter.
A beat. Will was breathing faster now, eyes focusing and unfocusing at what seemed like an uncomfortable speed. The air suddenly felt thicker. His eyes dialed in on the corner of Mike’s mouth.
“I can’t see you.”

The Mindflayer's death (and by extension, the Hive) left Will Byers without sight. As he tries to navigate this new existence, Mike wrestles with his identity and love for Will.

And maybe it’s the way the streetlights flicker, or the way the town is too quiet, but Will suddenly feels the weight of everything pressing in on him again. The truth clawing at his throat. The things he wants to say but can’t.
He takes a breath.
“Mike.”
Mike turns to him immediately, eyes sharp, attentive.
Will grips his own wrist, fingers digging into his skin. He hesitates—just for a second—before finally, barely above a whisper, he asks:
“Can—” He swallows hard. “Can you promise me something?”
