Eddie pauses for a moment as he trails off. The name sounds familiar, though he can’t think why. Visions of long summers come to him, unbidden. Bicycle wheels spin; long grass shivers in the breeze.

There’s no preamble to his request. Beverly does well to school her expression into something neutral, but Richie still catches the moment of surprise that flits across her face. She's silent for a moment and Richie almost wishes he could take it back, turn it into some kind of joke like he always does. Haha, you should've seen your face! Sorry, Bev, but you know I’m already in a committed relationship with Eddie’s mom. But she doesn't even look shocked anymore, so the humour falls flat, even in his own mind.
"I… didn't think you liked me that way," she says at last.
"I don't!"
