Summary
Magic, in all of its forms, was forced from Liraten by the strong hand of its reigning king and his forefathers. The beauty of it has been removed for so long that most of its citizens and nobility have no memory of it existing. There are only pockets to be found: deep within its forests, or slumbering under the cobblestone streets. Liraten is a country of strong opinions and stricter rules. It is not safe to be different, to be strange, or curious outside of society's standards. Within a small village that is sandwiched between an overgrown forest and the walls of the capital city, Syn is one such curiosity. She tries her best to stay to herself, finding comfort in her daily routines, and following the duties given to her by her not-so-benevolent benefactor.
The peace of Liraten is shaken to its very core when the mysterious and frightening country of Halate begins to attack, seemingly unprovoked. As the attacks get closer and more devastating, Syn is forced into a high-stakes lie that puts her life on the line. With unclear motivations, eight men pull her into a macabre dance of mystery, magic, and war.
