“I’ll do it,” Eddie repeats, looking at Buck in one of those silent conversation ways again, but Buck actually can’t figure out what he’s trying to say this time. It messes with his brain, until Eddie speaks again, “I’ll pretend to only be a little offended none of you have thought to ask me before, but Buck, I’ve fixed a lot of cars. I can look at yours.”

(or, the check engine light comes on in Buck's Jeep, Eddie volunteers to fix it and carpool with him in the meantime, and it all breaks down from there, literally and metaphorically)

    Summary

He doesn’t know what to say, and the silence grows fast between them as Eddie searches for something to say back that’s proportional to what Buck said.

I’d wheel you around too, Buck. I’d make you the first cup of coffee in the morning, just the way you like it. I’d give you my last spare pair of clean socks and my child and the morning newspaper. I’ll pull out Chimney’s chair right before he goes to sit at lunch tomorrow to make you laugh. I’ll buy you milk for breakfast every time you mention we’re out of it. I’d bring you the moon and get down on one knee and plead in a universe I didn’t used to believe in to let us be together.

But he misses his chance, and Buck carries on. “I’d wheel you around like a little old man.” Before Eddie can raise back an argument, Buck powers through. “I’d carry you, like Chris when he’s sleepy. Two Diaz’s, one for each arm.” Eddie can practically taste the smile in Buck’s mouth, and it makes him dizzy. “I’ll bring gummy bears tomorrow, and milk. You need anything else?”

    “Nothing, Buck. Just you.”

    ***

Eddie just wants to be in Buck's arms, any way he can. It's a disaster.

    Summary

He thinks about it, and then he doesn’t think about it because there’s no time to think about it. And he’s only half thinking about it when they’re in the locker room at the end of shift, and he asks if Buck wants to do something that evening. And Buck, honest to God, says to him, “Ah, uh, I have a date.”

It’s said with a head duck and a flutter of eyelashes, that thing Buck does a lot when he’s embarrassed or being coy that makes Eddie’s stomach swoop and plummet like a Tilt-A-Whirl. He sounds almost…sheepish.

But Eddie’s not crazy. Buck and Tommy broke up not even three weeks ago, seriously, unless it was a madness-induced hallucination and not something that actually happened in real life.

“Huh,” Eddie says. He doesn’t mean to say huh, but that’s what happens anyway.

Christopher has been in Texas for too long, and Buck gets back on the hamster wheel. Eddie considers some things.

    Summary

If Buck could go back to all those weeks ago and tell himself that this idea would place at the top of the list of his monumentally stupid ideas, he would do it in a heartbeat. He would knock some sense into his own head, or let Maddie do it for him.

But here he is now, and a time machine, unfortunately, hasn’t been invented yet.

Here he is now, with Eddie boring into his eyes after that. After realizing he’s been caught red-handed. Except, the implication Eddie’s just made means he’s been sitting on this. And, holy hell.

Eddie breathes out, his chest puffing out noticeably.

“Not so quick to answer when the tables are turned, are you?”

    ____

OR Buck ends up asking Eddie the thirty-six questions to fall in love. And really, what’s the worst that could happen?
