“Yes. You are to call her Mrs Todd now. If anyone asks, we were wed early October. Is that clear?”
Johanna thinks it a curious thing that he should sound so resigned. She has often seen how the two of them flit about each other, her chatting happily to him, pressing little touches into his arm. Mr Todd has always seemed a bit more reticent about his affection, but Johanna knows he must care for her, too. She knows it from the way he will rub her shoulders after she complains they are aching at day’s end, from the way he lingers to watch her walk away.

“Didn’t it hurt?” hisses Joyce, stricken.
Hopper clears his throat. “I, uh. I didn’t realize the stovetop was on.”
She stares. “It’s hot.”
He closes his eyes and scrubs at his temples with his free hand. “I can’t exactly feel it.”
"You can’t—?”
“Nerve damage. From frostbite, I think. Or maybe I finally got clocked in the head one too many times,” he adds, setting her up for the cheap shot.
Of course she doesn’t miss it. “That happened a long time ago,” she mutters.
Post season 4, the Hopper-Byers family adjusts. Joyce and Hopper have a heart-to-heart.

Summary
For a long period of time, Joyce had come to terms with the idea of remaining single for the rest of adulthood, let alone engaged. It felt like a give-in, especially after her first marriage that’d crashed and burned and left her with no interest in the idea of ever remarrying.
Yet, tonight, she can’t stop smiling down at this new golden band on her ring finger. The way the diamond catches on the light and shines back up at her like it’s saying hello and calls her Joyce Hopper.
After Hopper proposes, he and Joyce head back home for their dessert, as coined in season four.
