Nellie is deeply hurt, feeling sad to have caused Sweeney such pain, and fearing that she'll never get to repair things with him.

The term "Bovary Box" was (jokingly) coined by my old humanities teacher. It refers to the controversial novel "Madame Bovary" by Gustave Flaubert. The Bovary Box in the novel itself is a supposed miraculous invention that Madame Bovary’s bumbling husband Charles thinks will somehow cure the medical suffering of another character. In other words, a Bovary Box is something, an object, event, or location, that you think will somehow miraculously produce happiness, though it usually makes the situation worse.
