(It's even more chaos than before, the way Joyce is cradling Will, yelling at Bob to step on the goddamn brakes and get them to HNL faster; the way the quiet streets of Hawkins are disrupted by speeding cars, the way there are actual Demogorgon-like creatures running around beneath the town as they speak.
But all Mike can think about is the way his entire body ached the moment Will was on the ground, as if his lungs were on fire and he was being burned, too.)

Summary

Will shakes his head fondly as he adjusts the sleeves of his sweater. His ugly Christmas sweater. It’s bright red and a bit too big for his taste, but it’s surprisingly soft to the touch. The front of the sweater has thick gold lines, and at the center, an even bigger, brighter gold bow. There’s a tag on it that reads “the greatest gift ever.”
(“It’s true,” Mike had shrugged when Will looked at him incredulously. “You are the greatest gift ever bestowed…upon my life.”
He had said it with so much endearment that Will all but tugged him close and kissed him stupid.)

Once upon a time, established fully in the fourth grade, it was Lucas and Dustin and Mike and Will: four freaks—no, four best friends against the world and all its cruelty. And after the events of spring break in freshman year, they all come to realize just how much has changed.
Like how their world started out in a dingy basement in a small town and soon became a literal hell. Like how two girls wormed their way into their group in full force, strong and fierce and all the while graceful doing so. Like how they all went from nerds to alleged members of a Satanic cult to primary targets of an interdimensional psychopath.
Like how somewhere along that line of craziness, two out of four of said best friends became something more.
Or, Lucas Sinclair on growing up, falling in love, and his thoughts regarding Mike Wheeler and Will Byers'...special friendship.

Things get complicated along the way.
Or, Mike and Will write a comic book together over Christmas break. They're closer than ever, and there are so many elephants in the room.

Summary
Their shoulders brushed again, slow and equally savored. The kind of movement you couldn't pretend was an accident.
So Will brushed back, just barely. Testing. Flirting. Mike inhaled softly, the faintest noise escaping him. And then he spoke like he was physically unable to stay silent any longer.
“Will? If… if that boy you like…” he was standing so close that Will could feel the warmth of him against the cold air. “…If you ever wanted to tell him…”
Will felt his breath stop.
“…I think he’d want to know.”
OR: A buzzy post-vol 1 fic in which Will finally grows more confident, only for the hivemind’s possession to take it all away again. Mike may be the only one who can bring it back. And the two of them might be the only ones who can save the world.

Summary
The anniversary effect is very real; they’ve all felt it. Especially Will, as another shiver racks through him, stronger than the last. This time, Will takes a step closer to Mike and presses their shoulders together. Whether it’s for body heat or comfort, Mike doesn’t know, but he isn’t going to complain.
If he can’t protect Will from the horrible memories and sleepless nights, he can at least protect him from the autumn breeze. He quickly tugs off his leather jacket and holds it out for Will to take, who looks down at it in surprise.
“What?” he asks, glancing between it and Mike, like he doesn’t know what to do with it.
“You’re cold,” Mike states, no room for question. He knows that Will would lie about it if he could.

“I just can’t believe they’re fighting,” Lucas muses with a sigh.
“This is a bad one,” El emphasizes. “They fought in California too, but it wasn’t like this.”
“In the ten years I’ve known them, I’ve never once seen them sit more than six inches away from each other. This is worse than the summer of ‘85.”

It’s been exactly eight months since the beginning of the end of the world, and Will is upset. Now, to most people, this would be an obvious fact; some evil telekinetic man from another dimension is trying to kill him and everyone he loves, of course he’s gonna be kind of down. But Mike isn’t most people. Mike is his boyfriend— of about four months now— and he knows that this isn’t about the war. This is about something much more important— Christmas.

Christmas during an apocalypse is near impossible— but Mike isn’t going to let that stop him. Not when it’s Will’s favorite day of the year.
