“Don’t let Zoey hear you say that,” Rumi suddenly teases, her hands finally moving away from Mira’s face. The relief that she feels only lasts for half a second, because then Rumi’s hands are on her shoulders, fingers tracing against her skin. “She’ll take it as a challenge. God forbid she lunges at you during dinner. Honestly, she probably will as soon as she sees you in this dress.”
“It’s—it’s just a dress,” Mira forces out with a trembling laugh that sounds a little too fake on her ears. “You need to chill.”
Rumi laughs, bright and brilliant. “Yeah, but you’re the one wearing it.”

Zoey, with her restless energy and big heart, the one who fills every silence with laughter or questions or that wide, blinding smile. Zoey, who Rumi loves just as surely as the woman sitting at her side.Rumi glances toward Mira, choosing her words carefully. She touches Mira’s thigh, soft and grounding. “Babe… what if Zoey stayed here?”
