Ultimately, not even the King in Yellow can predict which timeline he'll find himself in. With infinite choices at hand, and unpredictable variables such as his vessel and the knight, truly anything can happen.
Which is how he's ended up here, with his vessel claimed yet refusing to surrender, the knight rushing to the vessel's side like the loyal servant he is, and all three of them being held captive within a facility supervised by people who intend to exploit them for their knowledge.
What a shame.

On New Year's Eve of 2025, Avery has a maybe-fake experience that changes his life. With no way to figure out who Derek is— was— if he was even real, or if they actually saved the world, Avery tries to leave it behind. But he's haunted by what he saw, and what he failed to do, in that Minecraft world as the clock ticked into the New Year.
And then, just as he thinks maybe he can finally move on, Derek finds him. He's alive, and mostly intact, and Avery allows the relief and joy of seeing his friend in real life to overshadow the cracks creeping through Derek's even-keeled facade. As they draw closer, however, Avery finds it harder and harder to ignore— until he realizes that maybe the world isn't as saved as he thought it was.Bookmarked by sweetertangerine
