Summary
Near the tailend of her shift, Garcia finally got a moment to herself after slipping out of the elevator on the eighth floor, and she beelined for a spot near the locker room that she knew to get little foot traffic. The vibration of her pager rivaled the beating of her own heart and only in its absence did she realize how it had soundtracked her day.
She checked her phone: still no birthday wishes. That was to be expected, she reasoned. Most people are busy wrangling their families on this day, so there’s not much room for her to pass their minds. It’s not personal. There were, however, four missed calls from her mother, and a text shortly after:
Te olvidas de tus padres
The message was so classically her mother that she couldn’t help but laugh. No birthday wish or any sort of preamble, just a straight-up guilt trip: You forget about your parents.

Summary
With a small smile, Garcia asks, “What time is it?”
Remnants of sleep still cling to the edges of her words, and as Santos revels in the way her husky voice thrums against her, she almost wishes that she could bear witness to this version of Garcia every morning.
It’s a wish that hovers shiftily in the corners of her conscious awareness, one that evaporates whenever she tries to look at it directly. But she allows its peripheral presence to persist, offers it a silent truce; and so that desire floats its way into her body and becomes manifest in the slightest of her movements instead.
“Early,” she murmurs, before returning to Garcia’s neck with her teeth so as to bite back any words that she wouldn’t be able to take back.

Summary
Garcia takes a swig of her beer and levels her with a heady gaze, but stays silent as her free hand gently tugs at the baby hairs that fan Santos’s neck.
Unnerved and despite herself, Santos asks, “How was your Fourth?”
Garcia averts her eyes with a turn of her head, hand coming to rest on her forehead, nearly meeting the now prominent vein there; Santos laments the loss of her touch at her nape.
“It was fine,” she says tersely. “I assume yours went well?” She meets her eyes again with pursed lips and a bored stare.
Santos takes a breath at how she’s somehow upset Garcia already, how it would be laughable if she manages to drive her away for the second night in a row.

Santos wraps her fingers around the curve of Al-Hashimi's inner thigh, dipping them down closer to her center.
“Trinity.”
She plays innocent. “Yeah?”
Al-Hashimi chuckles incredulously before warning, “No funny business while I’m driving.”
She clicks her tongue in disappointment. “You’re no fun.”
“It’s just a few more minutes, baby.”
“Okay, that’s not helping,” she huffs.
Al-Hashimi gives her a playful sidelong look. “Are you always this impatient?”
“Do you always look this hot?” Santos retorts with a squeeze to her thigh.

Summary
Al-Hashimi shakes her head as she huffs out a soft laugh. “So what gave me away?” Her eyes travel across Santos’s face, her lips curling at the persistent flush of pink there, whether from the alcohol, or the attention, or both.
Santos purses her lips into a small smile. “You touch my lower back a lot.” She meets Al-Hashimi’s gaze and holds it intently. “When you walk by me.”
“Oh, come on.” She throws her hand in the air. “I do that with everyone.”
“Princess told me that she caught you staring at my ass.” She puts up three fingers. “Three times.”
“Oh my god.” Al-Hashimi leans her forehead into her hand as she shuts her eyes. “Please don’t tell me that’s spread throughout the ED.”

Summary
Garcia knows Santos has been struggling with her second year of residency, the workload never letting up even months into it; and she’s all too aware of the tension with which Santos’s been carrying her body these past few months. As much as Garcia has been insisting that she take care of herself lest she risk burnout, Santos has quite the stubborn streak: it’s clear that she’s been running on fumes this past week, her body essentially comatose right now beside her. She regards Santos’s sleeping figure and resolves to wrest as much rest out of the following days as Santos will allow her to—and there’s no doubt she’ll be met with protest, albeit futile, at every effort.
Santos is a dense ball of tension as is, but Garcia wants to tease out any remaining coils of it that linger underneath, delicately working at them, dredging them up until she can eradicate the tension entirely.
