It doesn't hit Wei Ying until the third time it happens. In his defense, he's not running on all cylinders, and definitely only on four hours of sleep. So if all he's noticed about the guy sharing the elevator with him for the third time in two weeks is his hotness, who can really blame him?
But now that he's looking a bit more closely, as the guy stares resolutely at the number display ticking up, he sees the telltale signs: slightly rumpled collar on an otherwise pristine outfit, bags under his eyes—not so noticeable that they are instantly apparent, but there if you look closely enough—kiss-bitten lips, and (the most damning evidence of all) a hickey blooming just under his ear.
This guy is coming back from a hookup of his own.

"Will you wash my hair?"
Lan Zhan asks for such things with all the frequency of a lunar eclipse. Those rare instances come with a slight downward tilt of his head, unconsciously turning his stoic face sweet and almost shy, as if there’s any chance in hell Wei Wuxian will tell him “no”. This effect is heightened now by his nakedness and the wet hair sticking to his neck and shoulders like ink freshly brushed onto a page.

‘Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan.’ He takes a few rushed steps forward. Lan Wangji turns to look at him, his eyes softening visibly. ‘Ah— your forehead ribbon is tilted.’
Maybe I grabbed it while we were just about to— He notices Lan Wangji coming in his direction. It just occurs to him that he kind of said it too loud and now all the disciples, including Zewu Jun, are looking at him.
Lan Wangji stops in front of him and stares for a long pause. His eyes hold the same emotions they did a few moments ago, inside the Jingshi. There's a faint smile on his face, one that's reserved only for Wei Wuxian.
A second later, he lowers his head down in front of Wei Wuxian. ‘You may fix it.’
An open declaration.
The whole world stills just as Wei Wuxian's heart comes to a stop.
