Remember the first time I brought you to the pretty pond next to Jamie’s house? She’s the one who showed it to me, but I never cared about what it looked like when I was with her. I could only admire it knowing I wanted you to be the one to see it. The night I snuck you out of the house to show it to you is still one of the best nights of my life. I’ll never forget how excited you were to sneak out with me. It reminded me of how excited you’d get when we were little, and I agreed to watch your favorite movie or told you I’d sneak away from school so we could play together.
He feels a painful lump in his throat starting to form, and he swallows it down. He remembers the pond perfectly. He remembers the way it looked when the light of the moon bounced off the water, and the way the wildflowers swayed gently in the midnight wind. He remembers Lyle looping their fingers together as Erik watched the gentle waves of the pond, remembers the way the soft blades of grass felt beneath his back as Lyle rolled him over and kissed him for the first time.
