Summary
For some, it's almost as if being born in a box of darkness -- one with no holes or windows to the outside world -- and one day, you figure out how to open it, even if just the slightest bit. You learn how to open it, and you see light for the first time.
For others, it's like suddenly and without warning, some heavy weight that you'd had on your head is now gone. It's scary, but exhilarating.
And for many, it's like going from a world of dull color to a vivid new life. One where the grass is actually greener, the sky is actually bluer, and the only thing you truly want in that moment is to skip; that's how happy you are to finally feel happiness.
My name is John Egbert, and this is the story of how I learned to live.

Summary
"They would come when you least expected it, and invite themselves in with a swift kick through your front door – which is why thunder frequently woke everyone in the city... The possibility was a constant fear.
Somewhere down in me, and I'm not sure when, I had started to think that maybe this was not how things were supposed to be."

Dave escapes from a communist society tucked away on the hill because he can't take it anymore. A boy about his age named John finds him and takes him and his escaped family home with him- he looked as if he hadn't had food in days, and that was a pretty accurate estimate. John teaches Dave about what the outside world is like.. Dave falls in love with more than just this new society.

Sequel story to "The Sky Above, the Field Below." Accurate depictions of depression/PTSD, sad tone but happy ending.

Summary
Sheik’s job was written out for him the moment he was born. Be the guide, be the shadow, but nothing more. He was content with those rules, Impa made sure he knew them all down to the very letter. But knowing it and actually doing it are two very conflicting things. What if he just helps a little bit more? What if he stays a little bit longer than the prophecy says he should? Surely the Hero will still succeed, surely everything will be fine.
Just a little longer.
—
Sheik turned slowly to look at him, amusement still dancing across his face as he nodded his head to the request. “I want you to know you are the only person that takes the definition of the word ‘Guide’ to the very last letter.” What he wouldn’t tell Link though was that it felt good to be relied on so heavily. He felt like he was actually needed, that he was making a difference.
Link’s left hand reached out, taking hold of Sheik’s and gently held it. “I’m the Hero of Time, right?” Sheik nodded, a bit confused on where this was going. “Then it’s for me to decide how I need to be guided, not everyone around me. Not even the Goddesses. If they want me to save Hyrule, then I should be allowed to use as much help and resources as I can.”

Should have a part 2, but a solid stand-alone as is. Some rapid progression at points but good story.

“Please, Zelda. I know he’s real. Please just let me see him. Just once. He doesn’t even have to meet with me. I just need to see him.” Link watched from his place on his knees as something inside of Zelda broke.
“Do you really want to know the truth?” Zelda had sounded so sad, like she knew Link had already made up his mind.Nine years ago, Link saved Hyrule. But, since then he had been running from his trauma. Alone and struggling, maybe he can find solace in an old companion.

Bookmarker's Notes
Not the best beginning but a solid story. I think I've probably read it a couple times by now but still come back to it.
