Summary
The moment the pieces fit together Cassie has to scoff at her own stupidity.
The picture keeps shining back at her from his phone, no matter how long she stares at it. One sigh. Two heartbeats. Three taps of her foot. His screen doesn’t turn off. Four shakes of her head. Five blinks. Six seconds.
The fool must have disabled automatic the screen dim feature just so he could longingly and dreamily and stupidly stare at a photo of Mel, despite the fact that Cassie is pretty sure every time Langdon closes his eyes he can see Mel perfectly in his mind.
Cassie lets her emotions battle it out for a second inside her. In the end, both disgust and fondness tie for first place.
It’s nice to see Langdon like this, of course. Pathetically pining, sure, but also awkwardly excited. Carefully optimistic for all that he is worried and tentative, too.
(or, five times someone sees a picture of mel on frank's phone + one time someone sees a picture of frank on mel's phone)

“So let me get this straight,” Samira says. “You guys had sex for the first time three days ago.”
Mel doesn’t raise her eyes from the cardboard container in her hands as she nods, twirling some noodles around with her chopsticks.
“And if I understand correctly,” Samira pauses, like she’s building the anticipation of her statement, “it was absolutely fucking terrible.”
“Samira!” Mel says, her head snapping up so fast she’s worried for a second the movement gave her torticollis.
Samira shakes her head and points her index fingers at Mel.
“Well, it’s what you said.”

“You know you don’t have to do this, right?” Buck asks, tapping his thumbs against the front of the clipboard. He’s not nervous, necessarily, but this is the first time all day that it’s been just him and Eddie, and the weight of that settles over Buck making breathing harder.
Eddie’s eyes are glued to Buck’s moving thumbs, to the clipboard he’s holding. He stays silent and silent and silent.
“Eddie?” Buck calls, and this makes Eddie shake his head and finally move his gaze away from Buck’s hands and his clipboard to meet Buck’s eyes.
“What?” Eddie mumbles, like he’s waking up from a haze.
“I was saying that you don’t need to help me with this,” Buck says lightly waving the clipboard in front of him.
“But I want to,” Eddie says, and it sounds resounding and unequivocal. “I want to.”
Buck takes a deep breathe and says, “Okay, then let’s do this.”
(or 5 times Buck suspects just how much Eddie likes seeing him with a clipboard and one time he knows for sure.)

“We’re not going to pretend to be divorced just so Chris can get into a summer camp, Buck,” Eddie says, trying to sound convincing even as he starts to feel his resolution crumbling inside of him.
“Why not?” Buck asks, sounding genuinely baffled, like he can’t understand Eddie’s refusal at all.
And how does Eddie begin to explain the irrationality of his rational denial?
He can’t tell Buck the real reason he can’t go through with it. He can’t tell him without having to reach into his chest, clawing out his heart, setting it down at Buck’s feet still beating, and saying, “Because the only thing worse than loving you knowing I can’t have you would be having to pretend like I didn’t love you enough to keep you with me forever.”

Summary
“I want to see,” Eddie says, and then specifies, “Your nipple piercings. I want to see them.”
And that’s right, Buck has nipple piercings. Buck got drunk last night because he’s in love with his best friend and obsessed with his mustache, and, while drunk, decided that the best course of action was, for some godforsaken reason, to get nipple piercings.
The worst part of it all is that drunk Buck might have been right, if the way Eddie is looking at him is anything to go by. Or maybe that’s the best part of it all.
“Can I…” Eddie doesn’t finish his question, but his hands have moved away from’s Buck nipples and are now hovering over the hem of Buck’s t-shirt, asking for wordless permission.
Buck doesn’t waste a second and he puts his arms up, giving himself to Eddie wholly and surely.
(or the one where Eddie’s mustache makes Buck lose his mind and get nipple piercings. And then Eddie loses his mind about Buck's nipple piercings. And then they lose their minds together.)

“Will you play for me?”
Eddie’s question visibly confuses Buck, who tilts his head and raises an eyebrow in a voiceless but clear question.
“Your guitar,” Eddie says. He clears his throat and swallows harshly. “Will you play your guitar for me?”
“Yes,” Buck exhales, nodding his head rapidly as he straightens his body like he’s been called to attention. “Of course, yeah, I— Yeah, I can— Should I— Do you want—”
Eddie isn’t quite sure whether bravery or stupidity drives him to say, “Grab your guitar and meet me in my bedroom.”
(or Buck starts learning how to play guitar, and Eddie handles it as well as he can.)

“I think I must have done something incredibly right in a past life to be able to bag myself the hot surfer with an adorable kid that I have been pining after for the whole summer,” Buck says with a chuckle.
“Buck…” Eddie groans as he shakes his head. “I’m a terrible surfer.”
“Oh, I know that, Eds,” Buck says, laughing wholeheartedly this time. “That’s why I said hot surfer and not great surfer. Chris is a million times better than you.”

“Being boyfriends and being friends is really different,” Buck says, and Eddie wants to laugh at the fact that Buck is saying this to him.
“But if you’re so okay being friends with him,” Eddie explains, “It means there wasn’t anything he did wrong while being your boyfriend. So I don’t understand why you broke up with him.”
“I’ve told you before,” Buck says, and his voice sounds contained, like there is something he’s holding back. Is it anger? Is it an explanation? Is it, perhaps, both? “That Tommy didn’t do anything wrong. That’s why I’m okay with us being friends. I didn’t break up with him because he did anything wrong.”
Eddie opens his arms wide and then lets them drop down to hit the side of his thighs. “But then what happened? I just don’t understand. What happened?”
“You! That’s what happened: You!”
(or, Buck breaks up with Tommy but won’t talk about it, and Eddie just needs to know why.)

“I didn’t say I don’t like kissing,” Eddie clarifies. “I like kissing just fine, it’s… Kissing. All I said is that I’ve just never gotten the fuss about it.”
“But…” Buck begins to say, stopping when he realizes he doesn’t know how to continue the sentence.
“I love kissing,” he ends up saying, and immediately regrets it.
Eddie glances at Buck from the corner of his eye as he takes a sip of his coffee. He looks away as he nods and says, “I wish I loved it too.”
(or, Eddie thinks he doesn't love kissing and Buck just wants to prove him wrong.)

“Yeah.” Eddie nods. “I’m his best friend. I can’t count the number of times Buck’s said that to me. His best friend.”
Hen has heard Buck use those exact same words before, as well. She’s heard him say them jokingly, in passing, earnestly, in joy, in despair. She has always, always, been able to hear the meaning behind them.
She wonders if Eddie has ever been able to tell that when Buck says best friend he means soulmate.
“Well, isn’t he yours as well?” Hen asks him.
“Of course he is,” Eddie needlessly confirms. “He’s the best friend I’ve ever had. But I’m greedy, and I ruin everything, and I want more. I want so much more. I want him. All of him.”
So have him, Hen thinks. Eddie, let yourself have him.

“What is Evan’s favorite restaurant?” Tommy asks.
“La Plaza Mayor,” Eddie responds mechanically, the answer so easy he didn’t even have to stop and think about it. “He says it’s the only Mexican restaurant that comes close to my Abuela’s cooking. He really misses her cooking.”
(or Eddie helps Tommy be a good boyfriend to Buck and realizes in the process that maybe he's wanted to be Buck's boyfriend all along.)

“Baby, I didn’t even know we were supposed to be celebrating our first month anniversary,” Eddie says.
Buck shrugs his shoulders lightly as he wraps his arms around Eddie’s neck and lowers his head a little until he can press his forehead against Eddie’s.
“It’s not like it was going to be an official celebration or anything. It was going to be a small little moment just for us before Chris woke up,” Buck whispers, his words a tender breeze against Eddie’s mouth. “But I burnt the cake because I fell asleep on the couch waiting for it to finish baking.”
“That’s very—”
“Silly, I know,” Buck says, but Eddie presses his forehead with more force into Buck’s before separating their faces slightly.
“Sweet,” Eddie corrects, pressing the tip of his nose into Buck’s and grazing them together a few times. “Nice. Thoughtful. Romantic.”
(a love story told through anniversaries.)

“I want another tattoo.” Eddie shatters the silence delicately, careful not to disturb the peace that cocoons them.
Pressing his hand further on Eddie’s shoulder, because he knows Eddie like no one has ever known him before, like no one will ever know him again, Buck asks, “Here?”
Eddie nods, tightening his fingers around Buck’s forearm.
“It’s kind of…” Eddie pauses to find the perfect words, until he realizes he doesn’t need them. “It’s kind of for you. And for me. For us. You could… I’d like you to get it too.”
The corners of Buck’s lips curl in a soft smile as his fingers curl around Eddie’s shoulder. “I’d like to get it too.”
(or, Buck and Eddie keep getting matching tattoos, and then discover that maybe everyone is right when they think it means something more.)

“Oh no, we’re not doing this.” Chimney pops a bubble with the gum he’s been chewing as he moves one of his fingers back and forth to point between The-Man-who-isn’t-Buck’s-man-he’s-just-The-Man and Buck. “You didn’t drag me to the gym just so you can ditch me to fuck some guy in the showers."
Buck lowers his voice, leaning forward as if trying to make the words’s journey shorter between him and Chimney so they can’t escape and reach anyone else’s ears,“I wouldn’t fuck him in the showers.”
Chimney’s response is wordless in the form of an eyebrow raise.
“Not anymore, okay?” Buck clarifies, rolling his eyes. “That’s not who I am now."
(spoiler alert: Buck does fuck the guy in the showers. but that comes after nicknaming him Big Beautiful Brown Eyes, finding out his name is actually Eddie, becoming his best friend, and falling madly in love with him.)

“What happens to me when you guys get divorced?”
The question is so abrupt it takes Buck a couple of seconds to fully process it.
In that time, Christopher turns his head so his eyes settle on Buck’s and this time Buck doesn’t push away the need to shelter him, he embraces the feeling just as he embraces Christopher, one arm wrapping around Christopher’s shoulders. Christopher leans his body against Buck, and Buck’s heart soars and hurts in equal measures.
“When we— Chris, what?"

And then he takes a first sip from the cup, the coffee in it tasting absolutely perfect.
“Marry me, Eddie,” Buck groans, the rich flavors bursting on his tongue.
Eddie laughs, but the sound is only a background noise to Buck, his brain entirely focused on the drink in front of him and how the second sip from it somehow tastes better than the first.
“Already married, remember?” Eddie comments, and Buck frowns at him for a moment before he remembers his blurted out proposal.
“Well, damn,” Buck says, tightening the grip on his cup minutely and then loosening it instantly. “Shannon is a lucky woman if you bring her coffee this perfect every morning.”

Summary
There is nothing that rare about Buck walking inside the Diaz house without warning. There is nothing that weird about him using his key to let himself in during the middle of the day even when Eddie didn’t know he was coming. There is, however, something in his eyes that lets Eddie know this is not one of his normal visits.
“Bobby told you,” Eddie says, resigned.
He leans forward from his seat on the couch to leave the beer bottle he has just finished on the coffee table.
Buck doesn’t say anything, but when Eddie turns back around to look at him the expression on Buck’s face tells Eddie all he needs to know.
“He might have mentioned a… disagreement,” Buck says, walking closer to the couch. He stops in front of it, making Eddie tilt his head back to keep looking at him. “He wanted me to check on you.”
(a 5x11 coda where Buck and Eddie talk, but they don't talk.)
