Ewron held out a freshly picked stem of lavender, offering it toward Ash’s chest with all the gravity of a knight.
“Lavender only blooms in the summer,” he said, his voice entirely serious now. “Let this be a sign of my trust!”
Carefully, as though the tiny blossoms might shatter beneath his touch, Ash reached out and accepted it.
Holding the lavender in his hands, he found himself hoping that the summer would never have to end.

An alternate universe where Ewron and Ash first meet as children, only to cross paths again years later as adults on the island.

“My daughter breathes,” he said softly. “She is beneath this floor, alive, because of you, Ewron.”
Ash did not look at him when he said the next words, keeping his gaze fixed on the cross. “If I were capable of faith,” he said, “I think that would be sufficient evidence.”
