It’s not a jail cell. Hell, it’s not even an interrogation room. Not that Gintoki thinks they’ll actually, seriously throw him in either of those anytime soon, but anyway what kind of setup is this? Why does it feel oddly familiar? Why are the gorilla, the sadist, and Hijikata all sitting on one side of the chabudai—and why is Jimmy going over there to join them?! Now it’s four against one! The odds are stacked against him even before they’ve begun whatever it is that they’re about to begin!
Or: the Shinsengumi collectively give Gintoki their blessing to date their vice chief in typical Gintama fashion, and Gintoki learns the hard way that dating someone means also dating their whole damn family.

Somewhere beneath is all is the urge to laugh.
Enemies of the new country, boxed in by a storm, docked where superstitions come to life. A man with one eye, seeing specters where none exist, at the whim of an old woman who's lost her mind. It sounds like a joke. It's so stupid it's damn near laughable, and the irony would be amusing if he didn't feel like he was the one losing it.

Sometimes Hijikata wonders why he bothers trying to salvage the Shinsengumi’s reputation if the Shinsengumi itself is just going to destroy what’s left of it anyway. It’s not the kind of question anyone should be asking themselves on a Wednesday night on an overtime shift, without coffee or nicotine, but his life hasn’t been normal in a very long time and now there’s nothing he can do about it except suffer and wonder what he did in a previous life to deserve this.

“The world needs us, Satoru,” Suguru eventually said. His voice carried heavily, despite the construction around them. “We can’t afford to fail.”
“Then we won’t.” Satoru slung an arm around Suguru’s shoulders. “We’re the strongest, remember?”
But nothing good lasts forever. And they were stupid back then, young and stupid and so high on victory that both of them forgot one crucial detail: in war, things changed as quickly as they stayed the same.

Summary
Chuuya knows to expect a difficult mission at the very least when he is summoned to Mori's office one day. He isn't surprised to find Kouyou and Dazai already there, looking as if they were having a pleasant chat over a cup of tea. But the matter at hand is the retrieval of a sensitive piece of data; a job requiring a certain degree of delicacy. It's only when Dazai allows himself to be spirited away by a sleazy business man that Chuuya understands what type of delicacy Mori meant.
Or: shortly after Chuuya joins Portmafia he finds himself in the middle of a metaphorical chessgame between Mori, Kouyou, and Dazai. And for all that Chuuya isn't a chess person, he demands to have a say in what games he's used as pawn in.
