Hermione Granger didn't really expect to live through the war, or at least she hadn't planned for what would come after. Now that it was over, she had to figure out how to move on and what to do next.
She decided to focus on a number of personal projects. Getting her NEWTs. Becoming an Animagus. Figuring out who she really was by doing whatever she wanted.
As part of her progress towards that last part, she let herself get distracted by Draco Malfoy and Theodore Nott, and ended up doing a lot of things she'd never done before.

Summary
Hermione returns to Hogwarts for her 'eighth' year without Harry and Ron, with the horrors of the war still fresh in her mind, but determined to start anew. Malfoy seems subdued, altered by the events of the past year or so, though he's not without his acerbic tongue. Assigned Theodore Nott as her patrol partner for their prefect duties, she finally has the time to get to know the two Slytherins, and discovers that there's a whole lot more to them than the prejudice of their past and the snake on their house badge.
