Unbidden, Jiang Cheng felt a shy smile creep over his face, and his heart swelled with gratitude for Zewu-Jun’s unexpected support. It was true, he did need every spare moment, because he knew that his mother would accept nothing less than perfect scores, perfect attendance, perfect everything from him, even though he always struggled with his lessons and Wei Wuxian breezed through. He bowed again, thanked the First Jade politely, and followed as he glided away towards an unknown part of the Cloud Recesses.
Walking one step behind Zewu-Jun, as was proper, meant that Jiang Cheng missed the man’s small, private smile.

Shit. “Oh, of course. I must’ve mistaken it for the purple. I like the purple option.” Jiang Cheng quickly tried to amend.
“Um, didi?” Wei Wuxian sounded genuinely confused. “There’s no purple…”
“Gold then?” Jiang Cheng was panicking.
“Uncle there’s no gold either?” Jin Ling’s voice was laced with worry. Jiang Cheng could feel everyone’s, even Lan Wangji’s, eyes on him.

Summary
Jiang Cheng leaves Lotus Pier before the Wen Internment Camp and before the destruction of his home. When he meets Lan Xichen on the run from the Wens after the burning of Cloud Recesses, his plan to live a peaceful life away from cultivation sects is quickly derailed. Now, free to make his own choices, he cannot find it in himself to leave the other man's side.
With love, patience and time, Jiang Cheng finds his own happiness and peace with his past.

Summary
The spiral of his thoughts drained him further. The fire of determination had been snuffed out within him and Jiang Wanyin was out of reasons to keep on fighting. As he lay down on his bed, he dreamt of life without all of these feelings he had struggled all his life. He wanted to get away from himself and from how draining his life was. But he knew he couldn’t do that if he kept surrounding himself with the people and places that reminded him of those feelings.
Here, in Lotus Pier, the memories of his inadequacy in so many ways suffocated him slowly and constantly throughout his life. All his life, he had been drowning. Eventually, he knew he would stop struggling to stay afloat and just let the water swallow him.
This place was going to kill him.

Summary
It was the stupidest thing that he had ever done. But Jiang Wanyin blamed it on the alcohol that was buzzing under his skin and the fact that tomorrow was his 37th birthday, still fairly young for a cultivator but he felt every inch of the years in his body and mind (perhaps even more so). The night before his birthday, feeling tipsy drunk, he took out an amulet that he had confiscated from the nearby village because of the curse attached to it. The amulet was able to grant the person one wish, in exchange for something illegible. In the dimness of his room, heart-weary and drunk, Jiang Wanyin thoughtlessly cut his finger a bit to allow his blood to trickle onto the amulet.

Until the night their path bends towards Lan Xichen’s room instead of the guest quarters, and Lan Xichen asks, a hitch barely audible in his voice, “Take tea with me?”
The tea is a pretext. Jiang Cheng’s sure of it. Well, almost sure.
“We’ve just had tea in the hall.”
“Isn’t there always room for more?”
The tea is definitely a pretext.

Summary
Jiang Cheng isn’t entirely sure how he ended up here, with Lan Wangji in his bed, but it’s been going on for long enough that he mostly stopped questioning it.
It certainly was a hate thing—and mutual at that—at first, but it’s been going on for so long now, that Jiang Cheng’s stupid heart got attached. It’s probably the biggest mistake Jiang Cheng has ever made—and with his track record that’s surely saying something—because he knows what this is for Lan Wangji.
He came to Jiang Cheng full of grief, hurt and with a toddler perched on his hip—his toddler, Jiang Cheng recognized him—and then he simply didn’t leave him alone again.
But Jiang Cheng knows that Lan Wangji is only looking for Wei Wuxian; is looking for that particular Lotus scent that always clung to Wei Wuxian, for the faintest sound of his bell, for his trailing red ribbon.
The first two Lan Wangji found in Lotus Pier easily enough and he found it both with Jiang Cheng even.

“There is none.” Wangji whispers, closing his eyes. He is still on his knees when Jiang Cheng leaves and though his legs hurt and his body begins to weaken, he stays there, in front of the graves of many, on the ground that not long ago was being used for farming.
He once believed in a better world, in justice and morality and love, but no matter how hard one tries, no matter how hard one fights, there will be injustice and corruption, and war and death.
