“Wouldn’t dream of it,” Wen Ruohan replied, teeth clenched and brow furrowed as he fought off the pain. Blood leaked out from the corner of his mouth despite his words. “I suppose the stain of red on white is terribly hard to get out.”
His tone was bitter, angry, and he was probably making some sort of very clever metaphorical point, given the Lan sect’s white robes and Wen sect’s emblem of red and white.

“Okay, then how are we going to deal with it?” Jiang Cheng wants to know because it doesn’t seem wise to touch it at all.
At that question both Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian stop.
“We thought—you could touch it,” Wei Wuxian haltingly says and Jiang Cheng isn’t sure exactly where this is going but he knows enough to brace himself.
“And why is that?” he demands to know, crossing his arms in front of his chest and Wei Wuxian has the audacity to smile at him.

He smiles at him and a cold shudder runs down Jiang Cheng’s back. It only barely has to do with the sharp teeth Huaisang shows. The smile is cold and dangerous and promises him a world of regret, but Jiang Cheng is not going to go back.
He will not. If he has to die here, then that’s still better than what his parents want him to do.
“My name is Nie Huaisang,” he introduces himself. “And this is Nie Mingjue.”
Jiang Cheng relaxes when he realizes what Nie Huaisang is after and he even dares to give him a smile in return.
“And my name is Jiang Wanyin, Jiang Cheng."

Jiang Cheng reaches for him the moment he’s above the surface and he can tell that something must have happened because Nie Mingjue is incredibly pale.
“Let’s head back,” Jiang Cheng urges, his only goal to get Nie Mingjue out of the water and hear what happened and he knows that Nie Mingjue must be kind of shaken when he doesn’t protest and simply swims back to the pier where he immediately pulls himself out of the water and even going so far as to take a step away from the lake.
“What happened?” Jiang Cheng asks as he pulls himself out as well and Nie Mingjue lets out a shaky breath.
“Something dragged me under,” he says, his left hand around his right wrist. “There’s something in the lake.”

“Mingjue?” he asks and watches with worry as Nie Mingjue scrambles to his feet.
“I have to go,” he rushes out and then simply does just that and Jiang Cheng is left staring after him, completely unsure what just happened.

Summary
Wei Wuxian gets caught sneaking into Cloud Recesses.
But since he can't tell the truth - that he's just here to deliver his teacher's most recent love letter to her soulmate who's stuck in a cave - he tells a lie instead. He says that he's a Jiang disciple that had arrived late and so had snuck in through the gates. He hadn't expected the lie to work, sure that it would unravel as soon as they found a Jiang to verify it, but instead Jiang Yanli backs up his story, and even adds to it.
Which is how he ends up masquerading as the first disciple of Lotus Pier while trying to figure out how to get out of Cloud Recesses without anyone discovering that he's the disciple of Baoshan Sanren.

The Jiang have been nearly wiped off the map. Wei Wuxian has wrangled Wen Qing into agreeing to a desperate plan to restore Jiang Cheng's golden core. To accomplish this, he cooked up an absolutely ridiculous story about Baoshen Sanren that no one would believe besides his half-dead shidi, who would take any chance at this point.
No one told Baoshen Sanren she can't be on a random hillside in Yiling, however.

This was torture. Lan Xichen was torturing him. He really had been scheming all this time, Jiang Cheng decided, scheming to torture him with perverted and shameless fantasies until he went mad from sleep deprivation.
Well that fucker had another thing coming. This marked the third day since his last visit to the Cloud Recesses. Four more days. Then he’d return for their standing appointment.
Either to fuck Lan Xichen or kill him. He’d decide when he got there.
He lifted his head enough to finish the wine, dropped it back on the table, then hiccuped.

Cautiously, Jiang Cheng clicks on the notification on his screen. The first thing he feels is relief: it’s not Director Yao. The second emotion is surprise, quickly followed by confusion. The message is from the leader of another department, and Jiang Cheng's self-proclaimed rival, Lan Wangji. Jiang Cheng reads the message, then reads it again just to make sure his eyes aren’t betraying him.
Hello, my love, it reads.

Jiang Cheng has already opened up his emails in order to alert IT that Lan Wangji has been hacked when the chat application gives another Ding.
