Stelle and Phainon were, hopefully, already long gone. It was just Dan Heng and the black-cloaked swordmaster—the Flame Reaver.
The Flame Reaver seemed confused by his sudden change in appearance, and its shadowy clones wavered, flickering in-and-out, in-and-out. Its clawed hands held its sword tighter as it struggled to force out the words. “Who… are you? Must… reset…”
“I am Dan Heng, Nameless of the Astral Express,” he said simply.
The Flame Reaver flickered again, perhaps considering, then growled and charged.

Summary
In which Furina, on what was supposed to be a wholesome trip to Sumeru, is waylaid by ill-intended Fatui in the desert, only to be saved by a mysterious Wanderer, who is… damaged in the ensuing fight. Now Furina and this Wanderer have to make it make to civilization in order to fix the Wanderer’s odd injuries. Some small problems. The Wanderer can barely walk, and Furina can’t cook anything but macaroni. Nothing could get worse, right? Wrong.

Alice should let her go, should lay her back in the water, should speak the words that would ease the transition from this existence to whatever comes after, the words she's spoken a thousand times today alone, gentle lies about peace and rest and the ending of pain. It would be a kindness, really, the only kindness left to offer. The world has ended. The Heavenly Principles have fallen. The Four Shades are gone, scattered or dead or simply too exhausted to continue. There's nothing left to guide, no stars left to steer by, no order left to maintain.
What purpose could Kalidasa possibly serve now, except as another beautiful tragedy for Alice to witness and record and remember when everything else is dust?
But.
There's always a “but” with Fate, isn't there? Always an exception, always a moment where chaos decides to be contrary, where the threshold decides to hold instead of release.
